Jack Ruby's gun going up for auction

DALLAS — The man who owns the .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver Jack Ruby used to kill accused presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald says the piece is going up for auction this month in Las Vegas.

Anthony Pugliese III, who paid $200,000 for the gun at an auction in 1991, won't divulge his minimum price but will say it is more than $1 million.

The Pugliese Pop Culture Collection will go on the auction block March 15-16 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. About 150 of the items are associated with President John F. Kennedy or his assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

The Florida real estate developer said he was selling the gun because he has a new passion: To build a 64-square-mile bio-sustainable city in central Florida.

His old passion was assembling a grouping of 900 historical and celebrity collectibles.

Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner, purchased the gun in 1960 for $62.50. He used it three years later to kill Oswald.

I remember when they almost destroyed that gun and it took an act of Congress to save it.
It was about the same time this guy bought it and I think it was him that decided to show it off to some Congressmen on Capitol hill which just happened to be illegal. As a result the gun was confiscated and the law says guns like that have to be destroyed. It was almost lost to history.

That's a lot of money for a gun! Wonder what happened to the Carcano Oswald used. Anyone know?

Oswald's Moschetti Mo. used to kill Kennnedy and Oswald's .38 were bought by the National Archives from his widow.

Thanks. In 55/56 I bought one from a Roses 5 & 10 in VA for $20.00. They had them all dumped together in a bin and you could pick out the one you thought was the best of the lot. Italian army ammo was in a bin right along side. I fired a box and then later, sold it to a friend.

I always wanted one since I learned what they were. THe closed thing I have is an Austrian 1895 Steyr Mannlicher, but I don't have any ammo clips for it. I have to load it one cartridge at a time.

By the way, with your C&R, I strongly suggest you get one of the Steyrs. They are incredibly cheap right now and surplus ammo is still around.
