Jeremiah 27:1 Early in the reign of Zedekiah[a] son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 This is what the Lord said to me: “Make a yoke out of straps and crossbars and put it on your neck. 3 Then send word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. 4 Give them a message for their masters and say, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Tell this to your masters: 5 With my great power and outstretched arm I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I please. 6 Now I will give all your countries into the hands of my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; I will make even the wild animals subject to him. 7 All nations will serve him and his son and his grandson until the time for his land comes; then many nations and great kings will subjugate him.
8 “‘“If, however, any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation with the sword, famine and plague, declares the Lord, until I destroy it by his hand. 9 So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’ 10 They prophesy lies to you that will only serve to remove you far from your lands; I will banish you and you will perish. 11 But if any nation will bow its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will let that nation remain in its own land to till it and to live there, declares the Lord.”’”
12 I gave the same message to Zedekiah king of Judah. I said, “Bow your neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and you will live. 13 Why will you and your people die by the sword, famine and plague with which the Lord has threatened any nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? 14 Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying lies to you. 15 ‘I have not sent them,’ declares the Lord. ‘They are prophesying lies in my name. Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish, both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.’”
16 Then I said to the priests and all these people, “This is what the Lord says: Do not listen to the prophets who say, ‘Very soon now the articles from the Lord’s house will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying lies to you. 17 Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon, and you will live. Why should this city become a ruin? 18 If they are prophets and have the word of the Lord, let them plead with the Lord Almighty that the articles remaining in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem not be taken to Babylon. 19 For this is what the Lord Almighty says about the pillars, the bronze Sea, the movable stands and the other articles that are left in this city, 20 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away when he carried Jehoiachin[b] son of Jehoiakim king of Judah into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem— 21 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about the things that are left in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem: 22 ‘They will be taken to Babylon and there they will remain until the day I come for them,’ declares the Lord. ‘Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.’”
a. Jeremiah 27:1 A few Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac (see also 27:3,12 and 28:1); most Hebrew manuscripts Jehoiakim (Most Septuagint manuscripts do not have this verse.)
b. Jeremiah 27:20 Hebrew Jeconiah, a variant of Jehoiachin
Wishful thinking.... that's what the fake prophets were spreading.... wishful thinking. "God wouldn't let Babylon get us>>>> we're his chosen" "God wouldn't let them take the items in the Temple.....we're his chosen" wishful thinking. Jeremiah was telling them that God was sending a horrible conqueror to overrun them and destroy everything.
This is from the Bible-studys.org site.
Envoys from Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon came to Jerusalem in 593 B.C to confer with King Zedekiah and his officials about a military coalition against Babylon. Jeremiah wore a “yoke” around his neck symbolizing the need for submission to Babylon because the Lord had decreed Babylon’s sovereignty over the nations. Zedekiah went to Babylon in this same year, perhaps to report on his activities and the reasons for this conference.
God is explaining that since He is Creator of all the earth and all that is in it, He can give any part of it to whomever He desires. The creation must obey its Creator. God not only created the earth, but mankind as well. He can do with His creation as He wishes.
The lands wherein they dwelled had been given to Nebuchadnezzar by God. He has even been given the beasts of the field as well. At this point, Nebuchadnezzar is spoken of as the "servant of God" because he is carrying out the wishes of God.
Their false prophets, diviners, dreamers, enchanters, and sorcerers had been telling them that all was well. They had said, peace, peace, peace, when there would be no peace. They were telling the people not to go into captivity to Babylon. A diviner is someone who determines by casting lots or by a magical scroll. An enchanter is one who practices magic. A "sorcerer" is one who is a magician. These would be similar to fortune tellers, magicians, and readers of horoscopes today. All of these things draw their power from the devil instead of God.
We remember that Zedekiah was the uncle of Nebuchadnezzar. He was over Judah. This message was not just for Jerusalem, but for all who had been invaded by Babylon. "Bring your necks under the yoke" just means to voluntarily surrender to their control.
Jeremiah’s life was often difficult. Not only did he have to deliver an awesome message that left a great burden on his own heart for the people he loved so greatly, but he also had to face the constant opposition of Judah’s leadership and the false “Prophets”. Here as elsewhere, Jeremiah had to confront these lying prophets and challenge them to produce the fulfillment of their prophecies. One of the tests of true “prophecy”, especially those that dealt with the near future, was its fulfillment (Deut. 18:21-22). Other tests required that:
(1) The prophecy be in harmony with prior revelation (Deut. 13:1-3);
(2) Both the prophecy and the prophet show evidence of a high moral quality (Ezek. 13:10-16; Micah 3:5, 8); and
(3) The prophecy must sound a confirmative note in the hearts of true believers.
Jeremiah challenged the false prophets to prove the validity of their message by interceding that the vessels remaining in the temple not be removed to Babylon (2 Kings 25:13-17).
Jeremiah revealed that Judah’s temple vessels taken to Babylon (compare 2 Kings 13:14; Dan. 1:1-2), would be restored to the temple (fulfillment around 536 B.C.).
It appears the things of the temple will be carried to Babylon to be in safe keeping, until the captivity is over. The Babylonian captivity was of God for their sins. The restoration will be of God as well, after they repent.
This is from the easy English site.Men with messages came from the group of small countries. They had arrived in Jerusalem. They intended to plot with Zedekiah and no longer to obey Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah told them to take the message back to their masters. The message said that the LORD is great and powerful. He created the world and everything in it. Therefore, he can give the world to anyone that he chooses. The LORD decided that Nebuchadnezzar and his descendants would control the nations. Later, the LORD would judge Babylon. He would do that by means of other nations and kings. It had seemed impossible that Babylon itself would lose its power. People listened to Jeremiah's message. They thought that he was not loyal to his country.
Any nation that refused to accept Jeremiah's message would have troubles from a military attack. The results of war were hunger and disease. It was foolish to believe all the people who were telling lies. Those people were false prophets. And they said that they knew future events. The LORD did not allow the Israelites to use those wrong customs (Deuteronomy 18:9-13). To listen to those false prophets would lead to the LORD's punishment. They were saying that people should not obey Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar would make them go into exile, where they would die. But they should follow Jeremiah's advice and accept Nebuchadnezzar as their master. Then they would remain in their own country. They would have to pay money to the king of Babylon. But they would live peacefully. And they would continue to cultivate the land.
Jeremiah urged the priests and the people not to listen to the false prophets. Nebuchadnezzar took objects from the Temple in 597 BC. That was when he took away into Babylon king Jehoiachin and the important people (2 Kings 24:13). The false prophets said that soon Nebuchadnezzar would return those objects. The false prophets should pray to the LORD. They should ask the LORD to protect the religious objects that remained in the Temple. They should pray that he would protect the other valuable objects. Those objects were in the king's palace and in the city of Jerusalem. If the priests and the people did not serve the king of Babylon, he would destroy the city. And he would take away every valuable thing that remained.
Jeremiah ended with hope for the future. The LORD would bring back those objects from Babylon.
Apparently.... there was a meeting of the leaders in Judah and the surrounding area...... the lying prophets have been telling their leaders were saying "God will defeat them"..... but God wasn't on their side. It was God's idea that Nebuchadnezzar punish them. Jeremiah knew that Nebuchadnezzar was coming for Judah..... that's why he was telling the others to just surrender.... it would go easier on them. Judah was the target this time.... and God was loading the bow using Nebuchadnezzar's army.
It's God's earth. He created everything in the earth. He created everything on the earth. He created everything around the earth. He created everything near and far. He even created near and far themselves. God can do as He pleases. Even if we spoiled humans don't agree.
