LONG BEACH, Calif. - "Monster Garage" reality show host Jesse James has agreed to pay $271,250 for violating California's air quality laws by selling motorcycles that did not meet the state's strict emissions standards, authorities said.

His Long Beach motorcycle building shop, West Coast Choppers, sold more than 50 new or custom-built motorcycles between 1998 and 2005 that were not certified by the Air Resources Board, the agency said in a statement Friday As part of a settlement, the shop is building motorcycles that comply with emission standards, the board said.

Now if they can get him for no mufflers, like the rest of the motorcyclists.
Don't lump all of us under that umbrella.. my bike is quieter then most cars.

Now if they went after all the dealerships and aftermarket sales that sell illegal exhausts...

I've never understood that. If you're not going to ride it, why buy it? I feel the same way about cars. I don't understand the collector bug with vehicles. I mean isn't the enjoyment in riding them?

Bob, ya ride a beemer. It would still sound like a sewing machine even without mufflers. :lmao:

"Too loud" is relative. If I can hear your car stereo at the redlight and don't like the music, then it's too loud. As far as emissions, I still hold the opinion that, save for a few ill-maintained vehicles, industrial pollution is far worse than anything that comes out of the tailpipe.

This isn't about loud, it's about JJ violating the CARB regs. His bikes may pass, but he bypassed the rulse for selling a vehical in CA. The established bureaucracy needs to justify it's continued existance so it continually tightens the CA emission standards. They've proposed catylatic converters for lawn mowers.

That would be one of the flying bricks.. I've heard an R bike (boxer) with the 2 Brothers pipe on it (and CAT eliminator).. it sounded good, but too loud for my tastes..

One of our riders with a GS removed his muffler and just installed a straight pipe all of 4 inches long facing almost straight up, couldn't hear a difference.
