Can't "vouch" for the Syria-Iraq aspect, but wouldn't be surprised. What I can say is that the "Jesus visiting me in my dreams" is a real phenomenon that's more than just the random one-off. For numerous reasons (both good and bad) these "visits" are significantly under-reported.

I'm sure there are those who will scoff at stories like this, but that this is happening in large numbers is legit. Wish I still had citations/links/etc. for the academic stuff about this phenomenon I've read to support my comments, but I don't. Sorry, but I can provide a link to this book:

I can vouch for the Central Asia aspect Doyle's book discusses, though. When I was still on active duty and working in that region (out of one of our embassies there) I heard these stories as well (some from the people who experienced it).
