Matthew 8:14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
The first part of this section.... has always gotten me.
The poor woman was sick and bed! Jesus showed up.... took her hand... and she was ready to cook up a banquet. Was it the thrill of having company... or was it an emotional healing rather than a physical healing? Maybe she was so depressed she went to bed or just really, really lazy. Maybe she hadn't cooked for Peter in some time because she said she was ill.... but when Jesus and the crew arrived... and He was so nice to her.... she had a reason to get out of bed. At any rate... can't you just see her all excited to have company???
The second part is more on the biblical level. Many were brought to Him. See that? They were brought to Him. They didn't come of their own free will... they were brought to Him, and He healed them.
I can just hear those old ladies now.... "Oh, He was the nicest guy.... so polite.... He took my hand, and I was all a flutter!
I can just hear those demon possessed.... "Why did you bring me here? I have no business here.... I have money to make and booze to drink... healing? What healing? I don't need no darned healing. I'm fine.... where are you taking me?"
It must have been a real barn burner of a service.
Jesus healed them all!
