Hebrews 6:13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
The following is from the commentary. That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation: The two immutable (unchanging) things are God’s promise and God’s oath. It is impossible for God to lie in either of these two things.
Who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us: This is another reason for encouragement, knowing that God has a refuge of hope set before us. We can think of this refuge of hope are like the cities of refuge commanded by the Law of Moses, as described in Numbers 35.
This hope we have as an anchor: The anchor was a common figure for hope in the ancient world. Here the idea is that we are anchored to something firm but unseen (which enters the Presence behind the veil).
So, this part of the chapter goes on with the theme of Jesus being the High Priest on the order of Melchizedek. This morning I looked up this Melchizedek Priest. I went to another trusted site.... "Got Questions".According to the men who know.... Melchizedek was both a king of Salem [Jerusalem] and a High Priest. He prayed for Abraham and his troops. He also fed them bread and wine. Abraham paid Melchizedek a tithe.
According to the men who know... Jesus was a new type of High Priest. In Melchizedek's day... Melchisedek was the new type, a game changer!!.... but when Jesus came along... He became the new type, a new game changer.
So, the way I get this.... the reason they write "on the order of Melchisedek", they mean Jesus was a game changer!!!!
There used to be a time when all Prayers to God had to go through the Priest. Jesus taught us to pray directly to God, Our Father.
Jesus was a game changer!!! He opened the door for us to talk directly to God.
Knowing that God did indeed send His Son and allowed His Son to wipe our slates clean, gives us hope. Our Father won't lie to us. Our Father is good for His word. Jesus taught us that.
Jesus was a game changer!!!
Good morning... Please say a prayer for Hubby. His back went out. OK... Thank you for letting me put that request in here.
