John 19:28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
The Bible Verses this morning have a few footnotes. Here's the link so you can look them up. Jesus was the Passover Lamb. He was without blemish. He was without flaw. I bet He had never even broken a fingernail. He's the Son of God, what bug would dare bite the Son of God... so He was totally without blemish.
He hadn't had to have one of His bones broken so He would stay with the flock. Here's what I mean.... When I was teaching Sunday School, one of the lessons, [true or not it was in the lessons] I learned that sometimes a sheep would be a wonderer. No matter how close the sheep dog would stay, the sheep would just wonder off from the flock. So... the shepherd would have to break one of its legs so it could not wonder. That's why the lamb is pictured over the shoulders of the shepherd. That lamb has been broken so it has to be carried.
Jesus wasn't broken. He followed God's instructions explicitly. He was a perfect Son.
That's what all the hubbub is about. The Passover Lamb had to be perfect.... the prettiest, fluffiest, loudest, most perfect of all the sheep in the flock.
Now let's look at Verse 31. It says it was a "Special Sabbath". So, I went to the Got Questions commentary.
The Gospel of John says the day following Christ’s death and burial was a high Sabbath, or, as the NIV puts it, “a special Sabbath” (John 19:31). In this case, the high Sabbath was a regular Sabbath day that coincided with the Passover festival. It was a “double Sabbath,” so to speak, and considered “doubly holy”: to the weekly Sabbath, as normally observed, was added the first day of the Passover feast, Nissan 15, which also carried the solemnity of a Sabbath (see Leviticus 23:7–15).
Passover fell on Saturday. Now.... Passover was not a one-day thing. Passover lasts eight days. Some Jews only celebrate it for seven days.... but it was an eight-day event. Nissan 15th happened on April 5th this year. So, it was a spring [new life] event that last eight days [one day to rest] and there was one meal when everyone had to stay in because death was hovering over the doors of Egypt, taking the firstborn of every family without the blood of the lamb over the door.I hope I got that right. I know there are Jewish people reading this.... maybe they will clarify. I'm quite Christian..... and don't know the Jewish traditions all that well.
So now.... the murder is finished. The Passover Lamb has been crucified. They can go home to their families now and "enjoy" a great Passover Sabbath [double duty religious experience]. I wonder... did they praise God after they saw His Son was dead?
Jesus wasn't broken. He had no blemish. He was slaughtered. Jesus was the Passover Lamb, made ready for the "Special Sabbath".
Jesus wasn't broken.
