Job 17 1 My spirit is broken,
my days are cut short,
the grave awaits me.
2 Surely mockers surround me;
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
my days are cut short,
the grave awaits me.
2 Surely mockers surround me;
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3 “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand.
Who else will put up security for me?
4 You have closed their minds to understanding;
therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 If anyone denounces their friends for reward,
the eyes of their children will fail.
Who else will put up security for me?
4 You have closed their minds to understanding;
therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 If anyone denounces their friends for reward,
the eyes of their children will fail.
6 “God has made me a byword to everyone,
a man in whose face people spit.
7 My eyes have grown dim with grief;
my whole frame is but a shadow.
8 The upright are appalled at this;
the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
9 Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways,
and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
a man in whose face people spit.

10 “But come on, all of you, try again!
I will not find a wise man among you.
11 My days have passed, my plans are shattered.
Yet the desires of my heart
12 turn night into day;
in the face of the darkness light is near.
13 If the only home I hope for is the grave,
if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,
14 if I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’
and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 where then is my hope—
who can see any hope for me?
16 Will it go down to the gates of death?
Will we descend together into the dust?”
I will not find a wise man among you.

Job began this monologue at the beginning of Job 16. Verse 1 shows his absolute frustration with life, "My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me." In other words, he sees his own death as his only way out. He claims his spirit is broken, his friends have turned on him and folks have lost respect for him. In reference to his friends/counselors he proclaims in verse 10, "...I cannot find one wise man among you." In the rest of the chapter he just wants to die.
Check out verses 4 and 5.... it seems to confound a lot of people*..... This is from the enduringword.com site.He who speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children will fail: Job here seemed to justify his harsh words towards his friends. He recognizes that it would be a bad reflection on his character if he were to simply flatter them.
“Verse 5 is a proverb. Job was reminding his counselors of the dire consequences of slander.” (Smick)
This is from the easy English site..... concerning verses 4 &5....Job’s friends did not know that Job was innocent. And Job thought that God had caused this situation. So Job prayed that God would declare him innocent.
Job was right to say that such a person is very evil. But we do not believe that the person’s children should suffer. Each person is responsible for his own evil deeds. (See Ezekiel chapter 18.) So each person must confess his own evil deeds to God. And each person must invite Jesus into his life (John 1:12; John 3:18).
I'm an old woman with an online Bible and some online commentary..... I post here every morning so that I am held accountable. I don't know what I'm talking about.... I'm not a preacher and I've never been to seminary.... I think that's quite obvious. I have, however, read a lot more of the Bible now.... than most of my friends.... and a lot of the people who are teaching Sunday School tomorrow morning. But I have a couple of questions.....
Who said Job would go to Heaven????? Was Heaven a concept when Job was alive? There was no eternal life.....unlike the clothes in the desert.... humans wear out..... Jesus hadn't been here yet so death had not been conquered. There were a handful of people who God removed from the earth.... or kept for future use..... I keep hearing that all the good people of the Old Testament will be in Heaven..... I don't think so....
Job just wants a taste of Heaven on Earth.... that's the best Job can hope for.... and he had it..... and it got taken away from him when God bragged on him.
Now.... as for a child bearing his parent's evil..... I think the meaning got screwed up here...... Personally..... IMHO..... Job was saying.... "If I don't get this straightened out.... from now on people will think I'm a liar..... from now on people will think I had some kind of closet secret.... they will tell their kids about how evil I was that I couldn't even confess it or make a sacrifice to clear it up..... If I don't get this straightened out.... generations will think I'm evil... and I'm not....." In other words..... it's not that the children will go blind if their parents make a mistake..... it's that children learn from parents and the parents have the wrong information.... so the children will not see the truth.
But... I'm just an old gray haired lady with an online Bible and some commentary.... what do I know....

*people tend to get upset when they read about kids answering for parents..... but abortion is ok... right?
