Peter’s First Denial

John 18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

In the previous verses [John 18:10-11] Simon Peter picked up his sword and cut off a soldier's ear. Jesus intervened for Peter.

Jesus also arranged to let Peter go, even after Peter had assaulted the soldier. So following Jesus into the court would have been very dangerous for him. They might have seized him there.

The other disciple is not named. He is said to be known to the high priest. Now one of the commentaries said it must be John himself, because he refers to himself as "the other disciple" in his writings. Others say it was Nicodemus, a disciple but not one of the 12. It could have also been Joseph of Arimathea. Jesus had been to Joseph's house and he was known to the chief priest.

At any rate.... I see Peter standing outside the court doors and a servant girl wondering why Peter was standing on the outside of the court when he should have been inside the courtroom giving Jesus some support.

Of course Jesus didn't need Peter's support and Peter had a prophecy to fulfill.
