Peter’s Second and Third Denials
I can see why Peter denied Jesus the third time. The second time.... he was going along with the lie. The third time though.... Peter was trying to save himself. Jesus knew he would get back to that point eventually.
This reminds me of a story I told my Sunday School class.
I was out in the garden loosening the mulch. Loosening mulch with a hand tool was great therapy.
While I was stretching and working.... I was thinking about something that was bothering me. "Oh man... Oh man... Oh man" I was saying.... and then it dawned on me.... no human could calm my mind or solve the problem.
Then it dawned on me.... "Oh Lord, Oh Lord, Oh Lord" and that good feeling of peace just set in... the solution to what ever it was came to me.... awesome...
If Peter had just had enough faith to know that even if He told the truth... He was a disciple... Jesus knew him personally... and he would be blessed....
But that's not the way it would go. Jesus knew that. Peter went through so much agony because he acted on his own. Jesus knew he would... the Spirit wasn't with Peter yet.
The disciples were going to go through more than a few awful days....

John 18:25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
