Jesus Changes Water Into WineJohn 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

a.John 2:4 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect.
b.John 2:6 Or from about 75 to about 115 liters
A friend of mine sent me the following words. I couldn't come up with better so I'm going to use her words here.
"I love the book of John!!! I love the story of Jesus turning the water to wine! He fills the vessels with water; we are the vessels, we are cleansed (purified) by the water at baptism; the water turns to wine, a symbol of his blood, his atonement. Through this we are sanctified. All that we are is his and all that he has is ours! This is what the sacrament is about, a reminder of the covenants we make at baptism: willing to take upon us his name, to always remember him, and keep his commandments. If we do This he in turn promises us that we will always have his spirit with us."
I've heard a lot of discussion about the way Jesus talks to Mary here. He calls her woman instead of Mother. I think what He's saying here can be paraphrased as "Let me do it in my own time! I'm not ready yet!"
There's been a lot of discussion here about Jesus making wine so wine is ok. Remember, even tho there are plenty of vineyards, there were no refrigerators there to keep the grape juice in. The juice would naturally turn to wine sitting around. Then water would be added to it to dilute it and bring it back to the juice that people could enjoy.
Then look at the vessels He used. These were pots used for foot washing. This was a desert area and well water was at a premium. They gathered rain water for the purpose of foot washing, cleaning, and cooking. That was the water Jesus used... the mundane water.... turned to the best.
