Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
These verses really touch me. When my aunt Helen passed away, I cried like a baby. My dad had just passed and now I was loosing my aunt.... and I felt like a kid who had been left totally alone. I sat in the car instead of at the graveside, because my grief was just so brutal. I could deal with people but only for an instant at a time. People spoke to me but I didn't hear them speak. It was like their voices were disconnected. This time.... I hope you don't know what I mean because that means you would have suffered a grief that deep.
When I read these verses I feel Mary Magdalene's agony. She didn't fall down or back up in fear when she saw the angels. Her grief was to overshadowing to recognize angels around her. Her grief was to deep to recognize that Jesus was behind her.
I've often thought that she must have been more agonized by being asked "why are you crying?". It must have taken everything she had in her to gather herself up enough to answer. The movies all depict her as being in control.... but in my heart.... she must have been choking back sobs in an effort to learn where the body had been taken.
Then Jesus called her by name. Oh how that warm chill runs down my spine and goes all over my body when I read that she hears her name and realizes it is Jesus talking to her. In John 10:3-4 Jesus said He calls His sheep by name. She knew exactly who it was as soon as He spoke her name.
In my heart I know she didn't just want to touch Him. I know she didn't just want to drop to His feet and touch Him. I know she wanted to give Him a great big hug. Jesus wasn't up to that though. He was still in the process of gathering Himself together for the ascension. I can just see her starting to grab Him in a big embrace and Him throwing an arm out to stop her.... like someone who had just been through a major surgery protecting themselves from a painful crush.
I can see here that not only did she recognize Him when He called her by name. I can see that she was willing and able to shake off the grief that had been gripping her. He told her to do something.... and she was willing and able to do it.... immediately.
Mary Magdalene didn't question Him. She didn't say.... "But I want to stay with you".... the Shepherd had spoken and she was willing and able to do as He said.

John 20:11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
