Jesus Appears to His Disciples
Instead of saying "that night" John says "On the evening of the first day of the week.". There's a ton of controversy over what day of the week Jesus was actually crucified and which day of the week Jesus actually appeared to the disciples. One thing we now know.... it was the evening of the same day that Jesus talked with Mary Magdalene at the open tomb.
Then John says they were locked in a room. The temple leaders had already caused Jesus to be crucified, now the body was missing, and as far as they knew it had been stolen. So the disciples were in hiding. Doors and windows locked, hunkered down.... they were probably considering "what do we do now?" scenarios in their fear and grief....
And then ..... And then.... Jesus is just there in the room!
How cool is that? I love that John said Jesus showed them the places where He had been nailed to the cross and the place where the soldier had pierced His side. I know it was a way of proving His identity but I see Him showing His wounds the same way my hubby showed off the cuts on his hands when the ladder slipped and he grabbed on to the metal gutters to save himself. His hands were all torn up.... really bad.... and I think of that when I read how Jesus showed the disciples His wounds.
After that.... to me... the supernatural really takes a turn. Jesus breathes on them.
Jesus is God.... He calmed storms and walked on water. I'm sure that when Jesus breathed on the disciples.... it wasn't just a matter of good smelling or bad breath.... I'm sure the candles would have flickered and almost died out. I'm sure the curtains would have moved.... I'm sure His breath in this verse was more like a gentle breeze....
With that breath, Jesus passed along to them the responsibility of being able to forgive sins. Now here's my interpretation of this.... Jesus passed along the "Spirit" to continue His work.
Awesome....

John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
