Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
a. John 6:7 Greek take two hundred denarii
There were 5000 men there. Let's put that in perspective again. When the City Stadium in Green Bay originally opened in 1925 there were 6000 seats.
Now John says there were 5000 men there on the grassy area on the far shore of the Sea of Galilee. Now women and children weren't counted but we know there must have been some families that followed Him. We also know that there had to be a lot of women, like the woman at the well, who followed Him.
So it's easy to say that the crowd that gathered on the side of the Sea of Galilee would have filled the City Stadium in Green Bay.
Now think of that in terms of surprise guests coming for the weekend and you haven't been shopping in a few days! You know how to stretch meatloaf or stretch a pound of ground beef into a big pot of spaghetti. Even with those talents it would be hard to feed a houseful of people without making a trip to the store.
Now if feeding a house full of people [let's say that's 4 or 6 guests along with 4 or 5 people in your family.... so 10 people] imagine what a big deal it would be to feed 6000 surprise guests.
Let's think about the last church supper you had. How many actually showed up? Would it be safe to say the average church social may attract 100 people? Think of how much food is needed these days to feed 100 people until they are full? Now multiply that times at least 60.
Think of it as a hot dog dinner.... that's at least 6000 people X 2 hot dogs, 2 rolls, 1 bag of chips, a soda, napkins.... and maybe an ice cream cup each.... that's a ton of food and hours of preparation.... oh and I forgot the condiments...
No wonder John tells us that Jesus left before they could round Him up and declare Him king!
I just love this story. Today... FedEx Field holds 85,000 people. Kenny Chesney filled the stadium with fans. Now... don't you think Jesus would have filled City Stadium back in 33AD? That's a rock star.... and on top of that... everyone got enough to eat.....

John 6:1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
