Spiritual Blindness

John 9:35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

Footnotes:
a.John 9:39 Some early manuscripts do not have Then the man said … 39 Jesus said.

Jesus healed the blind man and then the blind man was insulted by the Pharisees and thrown out of the Temple. The Temple was the heart of life. Being thrown out of the Temple was a very, very, very big deal. This man who Jesus had just healed must have been devastated. A good man was just humiliated by the "good people".

Jesus heard what happened and went to see the man. Of course the Pharisees were dogging his every move. I guess they knew Jesus would come back to him. When Jesus sent the man to the pool, the man was still blind. He had mud on his eyes. Jesus introduced Himself to the man. When He did... the man told Jesus that he believed in Him.

In today's lingo.... Jesus told the man that "the Pharisees should have known better". The Pharisees took offense to that because of their self centeredness, pride, and conceit.

Some people won't understand these verses because we're good Christians. They go to church every Sunday.... those beggars on the street, they just stink, don't dress right, or they've done something horrible or they wouldn't be on the street. "How dare they show up in our church without a bath, stinking up the place." Can't they clean themselves up and dress properly?" They see themselves as fine people, good Christians, with a right to look down on others.... and as Jesus told the Pharisees.... those self righteous people are just blind.
