Joint relief for older dogs

Hi, I have a sheltie/collie mix. she is 10 1/2 yrs. old. She is overweight. We seem to go in circles with the vet. She is overweight so she is fed diet food etc. I say she can't loose weight because she seems to have a hard time with joint problems so exercising is hard. He says she has a weight problem because we don't exercise her. It seems if she felt better in her joints, etc. the exercise would go better. I have looked on pet meds. Does anyone use these med.'s with good results. Its not too bad now but she is getting older and I want her to have a good quality of life. thanks.

I know of several retired K-9 patrol dogs that are doing well on glucosamine.

What do you feed her?

I have an old lab/hound mix. He's been on Canidae Platinum for about two years and I've seen a tremendous improvement in him. He's like a puppy. He's lost weight and jumps around like he did years ago. He even had high liver enzyme counts and since I changed his food, they're normal.

Her joints would probably benefit from some exercise. Walking is a very low impact exercise. You could take her for 2 short walks per day instead of one long one. Don't you get sore if you lay in bed all day doing nothing? As soon as she starts to lose weight, her joints wil feel alot better.

If the diet dog food isn't working, try mixing it with rice...so feed 1/2 the normal amt of dog food and 1/2 rice. Rice has few calories but it will fill her up. I also agree with a joint supplement.

I have 3 old dogs, 2 overwieght. I feed them purina with glucosamine and chondroiten, and they get massages on their joints in the sun, and I make sure they sleep on a cushion. I have even put them in a tub of warm water. I did not expect these dogs to live so long, so I find myself having to come up with human like geriatric treatments. I also have a 15 yo cat I have to massage, and an 9 y o rabbit, and now my sons old obese rat!

Swimming in water where they can not touch bottom is the best. But, you have to do this every other day for it to work. It has helped my lab who has 80lb. fishing line in both rear legs inplace of her acl.

thanks for all the replies, "lassie" will like that. I went ahead and ordered the joint med. with glucosomine. She has been such a good pet and we've had her since she was a pup.
