JRT Problem

I've had Jack Russel Terriers for 5 years and have gotten real good with them. My dog has a very distinct personality and I can pretty much read him like a book. One problem has cropped up now that really has me stumped. We got him from the pound when he was about a year old and he was already house broken. He's never really gone in the house before. Now, about 3 times a month I'll find that he's peed in the house. He has access to the back yard, and he knows that he's doing wrong because he's hiding when I get home. I'm at my wits end with this. He's only been doing it for about 8 months now and I know it's not for lack of attention. Whenever he feels we are neglecting him, he'll do it right in front of us and look at us while he's doing it. He's not sick, and like I said has constant access to the backyard. Any ideas? Ask more questions if I've left anything out.

Sounds like you just answered your own question and he's "getting back at you" for whatever slight he feels you are giving him.

:ohwell: Yep

BD,

I was having problems with my 3-year old JRT. They are, in every sense of the word, dogs that thrive on having company. My JRT would growl and bite the door when we left in the morning, something that he started doing after we put my grandmother in a home, and moved into our new home.

So, since we decided he needed company during the day, I got him a cat. The cat wears him out playing with him during the day.

I would take him to the vet, and just to be sure, he doesn't have a blatter infection or something else that may cause this problem.

But JRT, are the worst dogs when it comes to potty training. The cat company improved the situation, but I still have potty problems from time to time.

I always thought that JRT = Problem.

 I have one that is a bit different than most. I don't think he ever really developed his hunting skills until we moved here. We only had a small section of yard, but I also think it is in how you raise them. The way I view ours, he is the kid's dog, always following them around wishing he was a real boy.

I always thought it was the taking of a 100lb ego and stuffing it into a 10lb dog.

Yep - in our dog's case, a 100 lbs ego stuffed in what looks like a pickle barrel with legs. He is 20 lbs., and I think he needs to cut "kitty crap" out of the litter box from his daily snack regimen.

No I think your misunderstanding me. When he wants attention he does it right in front of me. He's been doing it behind my back which is not like him.

:barf: Neo was enjoying the tasty treats when he had access to the litter box but he no longer get those treats

Sounds like he's pissed at you. My Boxer used to do the same thing; jump right up on my bed with me in it and piss. I showed him plenty of attention, he just didn't like to be crated and would seek revenge.

Yeah, if I had a dog that peed in the house, I'd give him some attention alright. Lucky me, when my cat wants attention, she just headbutts me.

I love JRTs. Use to have one but never will again. I got lucky and mine was very well behaved. My mom's is terrible though. After I had Noah she decided that wherever in the house he was that it was a good place to use the bathroom. If he was in the swing, under the swing would lay a pile of steamy crap and warm pee. If he was in his crib, right inside the door to his room it would be waiting for me. It was disgusting. My parents went on vacation a couple months ago and I was there watching the dog. She didn't use the bathroom outside the entire time they were gone. Not once. I'd crate her then make her go outside. She'd come in and as soon as my back was turned she'd pee or crap somewhere. I love dogs but that one really tested my patience.

JRTs are the juvenile delinquents of the dog world. They're amusing and full of personality, but while you're laughing they'll steal your car and go rob a liqour store.

Ain't that the truth. I'm glad I got him broke from his chewing habit. I once came home and found only half a hockey puck. Still haven't found the other half.
