Governor Larry Hogan continued his concerted effort to help the workers and families affected by the closure of the Verso Paper Mill in Luke, Md. In an interview with Allegany Radio Corporation based in Cumberland, Md., Governor Hogan promoted the first job fair to help affected workers, as part of the administration’s ongoing work to provide support, resources, and to seek both state and federal funding and grants.

“We understand what a crisis this is and how important this all is to the town and the region and we are on top of it,” said Governor Hogan. “Every single resource of state government is available to the town of Luke, the county, surrounding counties, and our next door neighbors in West Virginia and we hope to have a real success story out of it in the end.”

Many people are familiar with the practice of wearing poppy flowers on Memorial Day, but do you know why we do it?
The practice was inspired by the 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields.” In 1918, just before the end of World War I, an American woman named Moina Michael read the poem and felt particularly captivated by the final verse:
“Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”
In her autobiography, Michael wrote that she felt that she was being “called in person by the voices which had been silenced by death,” and pledged to “keep the faith.” She then began to wear the poppy in remembrance and dedicated her life to have the emblem recognized by governments, veteran organizations, and the public. She continued this for 26 years until her death in 1944.
