We still use the word slumgullion today, except that it's evolved beyond goulash to mean any meal that looks like some concoction thrown together at the last minute.

First time I'd ever seen the word was this thread.

But then you never invite me over to dinner, so that's prolly why.

I remember the first time I had a real goulash, I was like, what is this???

Ground beef, macaroni, tomato sauce, and I put corn in it. Goulash.

To me, goulash was more of a browned cubed beef with taters, carrots and onions in a brown gravy. The gravy was sopped up with lots of buttered bread.

I was watching a movie called "It happened on fifth avenue" and they mentioned slumgullion and I had to see what was in something with that repulsive of a name, lo and behold it was my moms exact recipe for goulash. The name sounds like it should be made with dirty dishwater and slugs.

My mom's garbage eggs are a thing, called hoppel poppel. To us it was just a way to use up leftovers, not something that had a name and a recipe.

We called it slumgullion, too. I figured it was probably a word that originated during the depression and meant a stew or casserole that consisted of whatever there was to throw into the pot.

Goulash, at least the hungarian kind, is something very different - with hungarian paprika to spice it up. My first encounter with true hungarian goulash was in Russia - probably the best thing I ate the entire month I was there - with a kick to it. It's more like stew with chunks of meat, rather than ground beef and doesn't necessarily have the macaroni in it to stretch out the meal. mmmmm goulash.

Now you all are making me want to make a proper Hungarian goulash. I don't think I've ever even had it before, but it sounds delicious.
