Stop Staring!!!!!
you see/hear any increase in the aircraft activity in the area this weekend. This is a press release from NORAD:

NORAD exercise planned for Washington D.C.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR), will conduct Exercise Falcon Virgo 08-02 Friday in the National Capital Region (Washington, D.C.).

This exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, the Continental US NORAD Region, Civil Air Patrol, US Coast Guard and CONR's Northeast Air Defense Sector.

Exercise Falcon Virgo 08-02 is designed to test NORAD's intercept and identification operations, as well as procedural tests of the NCR Visual Warning System. Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air Force F-16s and Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopters will participate in the exercise. Residents in the area can expect flights to occur during the late night and early morning hours, on scheduled exercise dates. In the event of inclement weather the exercise will push to November 17; further weather delays will cancel the exercise.

These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure NORAD's rapid response capability. NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command's response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

As the Continental United States (CONUS) geographical component of the bi-national command NORAD, CONR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs air sovereignty activities for the CONUS region. CONR and its assigned Air Force assets throughout the country ensure air safety and security against potential air threats.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, NORAD fighters have responded to more than 2,100 possible air threats in the United States, Canada and Alaska, and have flown more than 46,600 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air-to-air-refueling aircraft.

Depends on where you live, what type of Trunked systems you hope to receive and whether or not you hope to listen to Military aircraft.

If all you want is local Police/Fire and such. Radio Shack puts out a decent line and are always there to help you program and such. You profile does not say where you live. If in Charles County you will need a Scanner capable of picking up a Digital System. These can be a bit pricey

If you want Police/fire and such and also want Military aircraft I recommend Uniden scanners. RS does sell these now as well but chances are they can be found cheaper on the net.

If this is you first scanener, I tend to recommend a decent handheld model. Nice to be able to pick it up and go mobile, run out the front door etc.

I'd be happy to help you make your decision in any way I can.

Jeff, I bought a Radio Shack Digital right after the police went that way. $500. It's not a handheld but I also bought an adapter and can plug it into my car lighter should I have a need, so indirectly it is quite portable as long as my car is with me. Just thought I'd throw that in.

I have not paid much attention to the MilAir freqs the past few days so I am unsure as to why the Blimp is around. If I can catch it up I'll pay some attention to it.

Yep, I have a base unit I keep mounted in my truck as well. I even have a PA speaker mounted under the hood so that if I am out in the yard piddling around I can switch it to the PA and listen while out there.

But I do like keeping a HH around. Nice to take to the airshows and listen to the Blue Angels with. They are a hoot to listen to.
