Just Saw A Buck Pass By The Office Window

I'm getting my stuff together to head home and out of the corner of my eye I see a buck (a 6 pointer maybe) pass by the office window and trot off into the field.

Hmmm.......I guess we should REALLY start paying attention NOW, huh? Maybe the rutting is gonna start early this year; or is it really about time anyway? I don't know. I'm not a deer hunter.

The time is now. The does usually come in estrus during very early November, and during the days leading up to that time it is common to see bucks in unusual places. Some of these bucks are looking for does, and some of them have gotten their butts kicked by larger bucks and are now looking for a new area to inhabit.

I often wondered about that. We keep hearing where the buck stops, which is fine. However, it would seem to be a good idea to be able to get him along the way once in awhile seeings how everyone else is likely waiting for him to stop.

I had to blow my horn at one at the corner of Cove Point Rd/Little Cove Point Rd this morning to get it to do "something". It just stood there by the road and I was stopped in the road. I knew that as soon as I started moving again, it would dart out. After the second honk, it decided to turn tail and head back into the woods.

I usually get up in the middle of the night for a glass of water, on Wednesday night as I walked down the stairs I spotted a deer in my planter right in front of the house. I slowly walked down and spotted the 3 does, all eating the grass in front of my porch. I grabbed my camera, snapped the pic.... nothing but the reflection of the glass

There are a lot of deer in that area. Usually see a few of them dead around this time of year. More so since they bulldozed the area to build more houses.
I especially get aggravated at tailgaters because if they aren't paying attention and you have to stop quick...
I hit a deer once in upstate NY. Once was enough, TYVM!

Wait, you mean they're NOT sleeping on the side of the road :jameo:

Someone lied to me

Irrelevant to your statement; but the combination of this time of year and a place called Hermanville Road scared the H*ll outta me sometimes. I can't tell you how many times "Bambi" or one of her relatives has darted across the road this time of year.

Another irrelevant comment: a year or two ago, I was on my way home on Route 249 toward Piney Point. It was late, late; I WAS SOBER and out of the corner of my eye (I have very acute peripheral vision);at 50 MPH, I see a deer head and a BIG rack of antlers out my driver-side window. Another inch or two and he would've come THRU it. After my heart started again, I pulled off the shoulder of the road and crept my way to my driveway.

I have a couple more incidents, but I'll save them for later.
I can almost hear some of you

Too late for me, got myself a 6 pointer on Rt 247 Monday. He tried to jump over my jeep, didn't make it. Needless to say my windshield is gone, along with my rearview mirror. If I had been driving anything lower to the ground, deer would've been in the car with me. I am lucky. Another car going the opposite way was damaged as well...he really did come out of nowhere!

Something almost similar happened to me back in '93.....'94.....somewhere about that time. I was coming home from one of the clubs in Waldorf on a Saturday night/Sunday morning; sober as a judge. I was almost on the Hollywood side of Oraville when a deer jumped across both lanes in front of me. Of course, I swerved (too quickly for the road conditions) to avoid hitting the deer, only to slide on the wet pavement, into the guardrail head-on, spinning clockwise to also flatten the left rear quarter panel of my "low-slung" "road-rocket" '92 Plymouth Laser(Mitsubishi Eclipse.....same thing).
I was living at home at the time; and when the tow truck woke Dad up, he came out, saw the car and asked, "[What the H*ll did you hit?" I told him I avoided a deer only to catch a guard rail. Dad said, 'NEXT time, hit the d*mn deer." Hind sight being 20-20, I prob'ly should have. The low stance of that car prob'ly would have made the deer go right over top of the car.
That was the beginning.....after that, I got into a fender bender and one more major accident (in the snow on 249); the one that took my toy away from me. :bawl:

Ah well.....live and learn.....I'm done now.

I have other stories but.....another time.....another place.....
