3 men go into a motel. The desk clerk said the room was $30, so each man paid $10 and went to the room. A while later, the desk clerk realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5.

On the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27. Add to that the $2 the bellboy kept and the total is $29. Where is the other dollar?

Sxy is right.

$30 (original price) - $5 (for overpayment) = $25 (revised price)

$25 / 3 (men) = $8.333333

so each man paid $8.333333 for the room ($8.33333 x 3 = $25), each man got $1 refund ($1 x 3 = 3), plus the bellboy got his $2.

$25 + $3 + $2 = $30

Unfortunately my job consists of problems like this.

We have $100,000 is Task 1 that is open until 30 Dec. On 1 Oct $99,000 has been spent and Pixie sends out an email telling everyone to stop charging to it because there is no money left. On 1 Dec Pixie's boss pulls a Status Report and $140,000 has been charged to Task 1. On 2 Dec Pixie's boss tells her to make the $40,000 overrun go away.

Now that's a special trick!

Don't they usually give you a special room and jumpsuit for this? With a balcony overlooking guys with shotguns?

:lmao: Me too! The Admin. Director always sends e-mails once a grant is terminated. People (not me) continually bill to it. Ugh.....
