The Calvert County Family Network with other Southern Region Local Management Boards will host listening sessions for the Juvenile Justice Reform Council (JJRC). State officials from the council will attend to hear public comment on the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services system for reform initiatives.

Residents and organization representatives from Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties are invited to attend one of two sessions on Jan. 16, 2020, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. or 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Harriet E. Brown Community Center located at 901 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick. Those who wish to speak must sign up in person. Sign-up begins 30 minutes prior to each session.

The JJRC is seeking input from representatives of organizations with experience in juvenile justice policy reform, advocating for groups with disproportionate contact with the criminal and juvenile justice system, advocating for victims of crime, and restorative justice regarding the juvenile justice system. Public testimony could include such topics as education, family and youth engagement, community safety, community programs, behavioral health, and substance abuse.

Those interested in attending may pre-register for the Juvenile Justice Listening Session through Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/juvenile-justice-listening-session-tickets-85776203935.

The JJRC is charged with developing a statewide policy framework of strategies that increase public safety and reduce recidivism of young offenders; researching best practices for treating juveniles who come in contact with the criminal and juvenile justice systems; and recommending ways to limit juvenile contact with the criminal and juvenile justice systems. Working with the Local Management Boards, the listening sessions will happen in all geographic regions of the state.
