Kids and public restrooms

Over the week-end I had a woman approach me and tell me that she though it was inappropriate that I would let my 4yr old son use the men's bathroom at Target. (She must have seen him go in while I was waiting). Am I wrong? I didn't see the big deal. It's not like we were at an Interstate rest stop and I let him go in there. Somestimes I take him in the womens with me but I want him to learn to use the "appropriate" bathroom and how to handle himself in there ie. flush toilet, wash hands, etc.

What do others do when your child (opposite sex from you) has to use the restroom and what age did you allow him/her to use the appropriate restroom without you? I'm just curious. I will still let him use the men's room by himself but I was just surprised by this women's reaction.

4? I wouldn't... but that's me. my son was a couple years older then that when I let him. And i wouldn't hesitate to open the door and peek in if it was taking him to long.

My younger kids are 5 (boy) 7 (girl) and 8 (boy) and none of them go to the bathroom alone, either I take them in myself or my oldest (13) does or one of us will wait and stand by the bathroom door.

I take my son into the women's bathroom as you never know what sicko is lurking in the bathroom awaiting for a helpless victim such as a young child. Call me a bit paranoid or over protective, but I would rather him be safe.

Not all psychos and child molesters are in bathrooms on the interstates. It only takes a minute to harm a child, shame on you!

You are one of THOSE parents aren't you? You know the ones that let their kids go to the potty alone?

j/k It is the parents decision. I wouldn't do it but that's just me and I would never approach someone because they allow it.

That's true...I have a friend whose daughter was assaulted by a homeless man in the top of a fast food restaurant playground. She was right there at the tables next to it.

That is my issue with the woman.

you should have told her that although on many levels you agree with her, You felt that he was reaching an age that was just to old to be held up to pee in the public water fountain anymore.

I personally wouldn't send boy to go by himself (he's 5). I wouldn't be mad at the woman for saying that, she was trying to be helpful and she had a good point.

Not only that, but little boys have to TOUCH EVERYTHING. :barf:

That's very true! They have to touch everything! :barf:

I'm constantly washing my boys' hands, so they wouldn't get sick. My hands are very dried out from constantly washing the hands all day long.

I wouldn't let my 4 yrs old son to go to men's bathroom by himself. He's too young for that, and he likes to play with water, so no way I would let him go by himself. Every time he have to go to bathroom, I take him to women's bathroom with me.

I wouldnt let my son use a public restroom by himself at that age either. I would almost have to think this women had a reason to say that to you...maybe she was married to a molester, or a sister to one. You never know what makes someone speak out like that. And I agree, someone could be sitting and waiting and by the time you figured it took him to long to come out, the damage would already be done.

And get easily distracted....

It's people that don't speak up that ease the way for criminals and molesters to keep getting away with things. If what she said made you stop and think, then just be grateful no one was hurt....this time.

He is your kid not her's. You should have told that b!tch to back off. If you feel like it's time for him to use the bathroom on his own then that is no one else business but your own.
