Kids & braces

My older step-son just got braces today. He is a VERY picky eater. He lives off of pizza, waffles, hot dogs and mac & cheese. Oh, and chicken noodle soup (thank God). He's crying that it hurts and he can't eat, but at the same time he puts his nose up to ice cream, pudding and jello (strange kid, I know).

Any suggestions?

Full dose of Motrin will ease the pain. Him not wanting to eat will pass soon enough.

:yeahthat: Also, when my daughter had braces her orthodontist told me to keep pain down after tightenings, get get her some non-stick gum and let her chew it immediately after the tightening. It worked for my daughter after several painful tightenings. I would also give her the motrin 30 minutes before her appointment.

Good Luck.

Will he try anything warm or hot? When my son got his braces on he wasn't feeling very up to eating either - at first - but he did find warm things were easier for the first few days than cold. The new sipper cups of soup are great because you don't have to worry about chunks of food! As kwillia suggested, Motrin helps too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!!

He's tough because he won't swallow pills. I'll have to run out and get liquid.

What could I make in the blender that he might eat? Suggestions please?

He doesn't really have a sweet tooth and I don't really have many ideas.

Whatever he typically eats can be dumped into a blender for a few seconds to puree it for him to eat.

It all looks yucky, but it still tastes great.

Meatloaf with mashed potatoes
Buffalo chicken strips
Hamburgers with baked beans
etc.

You get the point. If he can eat it in its' original state, he can eat it coming from a blender. He'll need to get over the "looks" department, but if he's hungry enough, he'll eat it. :roflmao:

That's what I was afraid of! :roflmao: He'll probably turn his nose up to a warm chicken nugget shake, but I guess if he gets hungry enough, he'll eat it. :lmao:

Would he drink smoothies (strawberries, bananas, blueberries, etc.)

I used to had braces when I was a teenager and I never cried about tightening. After 2 weeks, the doctor wanted to check on me and asked if I'm in any pains and I said no. She retightened the wiring in the braces and I never said a word. To tell you truth, I didn't even know she was retightening them. I found out after she told me what she did.

I was supposed to have the braces on for five years, but it came off after almost two years. The doctor was so surprised because I never complained and told me that I had high tolerate for pains. She was able to speed up the process of braces wearing and to this date, my teeth are still straight and perfect. :yay:

Nah, he doesn't like sweets. I hope he feels better with the Motrin.
