Kids on the loose

Everyone has their own ideas on parenting, and I was just seeking some opinions so here is the question.

At what age have you, or would you allow your child to play outside your home without having visual supervision of your child, in your own yard and outside of your own yard?

I have a almost 3 1/2 year old. She isn't allowed outside of my door without me being present. However, there are several children in my neighborhood, some still in diapers that I would estimate to be no more than 2 or 3 at the most, who are allowed to run the entire neighborhood without supervision. I doubt this will change, and I don't know of any laws that could enforce parental supervision, but I am worried that it's a train wreck waiting to happen. One of the little ones was nearly road kill yesterday. I really don't want to see anything bad happen, but I know it's not up to me to supervise everyone else's children either.

When I say there is no visual supervision by any parent, these kids are often at least one street over from where they live. Sometimes there are older siblings out with them, but the siblings are young as well, 4-7 years old themselves and aren't paying a lick of attention to what their little brother/sister is doing.

I allow my 2 year old outside without me as long as her big brother is there with her and she has to stay in the backyard and I have lots of windows to see out into the back.

It was the same way when I lived in the townhome in La Plata. Parents just let their children outside to play w/ out supervision.

I let Jack (2 1/2) out in our fenced back yard when at least one of his brothers are out there. Otherwise me or Big B is out there w/ him. There are too many passing cars in our neighborhood so I would never let him play out front w/ out me or Big B being present. The older boys needed to be 5 before they were allowed to play alone in the front yard and they were not allowed to go past the fence.

Same here. My 8 and 5 yr old can play in our yard, and only our yard. But we live on a side road court well away from the main road so that makes a difference. I will look out a window every so often to make sure I know where they are and both are good about coming to me if they want to go two doors down to a friend's house.

If they do go over, I come with them because the house is on a blind curve in the court and I would worry about them. The other kid's mom tends to watch them from her screened in porch and you can't see cars coming from there.

My mom let me wander around the neighborhood unsupervised as a kid. I rode my bike all over, and was even allowed at the pool alone at age 9.

Forget that. Im scared that Im taking her to meet my kids next month... My oldest is going to be all over her. :killingme

I would say they should get along great since they're close in age and all, but she would send me a PM asking if I have something against her or something for picking on her.

BTW, I'm not against the age difference, I once dated a guy 24 years older than me too.

I wasn't allowed to go swimming by myself either, but you'd be amazed at how many times I either got "pushed" or "slipped" in

Yeah the oldest tried that w/ me a week ago. I doubt he will do that again because I kirked out infront of his friends and embarrassed him pretty good. He also was placed on restriction for 1 week... I am the meanest mom ever  :muahhaha:

That being said..

At 3 1/2 I'd think they'd understand rules like "Stay in the yard".

Ours as soon as he gets home jumps into his GATOR and heads to his friends house.. they all get on their tractors and head to our house to play on the playground.

Between the 3 sets of parents and the three houses, we know where he is.

I was early 30's, he was 54. It didn't seem like such a big deal at those ages. My baby daddy is 8 years younger than me  Age is just a number.
