I love the "Killing" series, but this one is particularly good when considering current events. Charismatic personalities leading the willing into mass hysteria, to the point that they not only justify but applaud killing their friends, relatives, and neighbors.
Humans don't change. Throughout history, all over the world, there are examples of humans defending the indefensible and committing atrocities in the name of righteousness. These horrible people think *they* are the good guys. They think they are fighting evil, completely oblivious to the fact that they *are* the evil.
One wonders why some courageous villager didn't kill the girls making these false accusations and causing so much death and destruction. And the answer is....because they didn't. There were no courageous villagers. Anyone who spoke out against it was accused of being a witch themselves and killed. So obviously speaking out wasn't the right way to go, and yet nobody said enough is enough and just laid waste to them. They just huddled in their homes trying not to attract attention.
Which makes you admire all the more our Founding Fathers and the badass patriots who fought to free us from Great Britain.
So anyway, if you read the book you'll relate a lot of it to what's going on in our US justice system and pop culture today. Because humans don't change.
