Kitten Breath

So Nacho's breath is rancid. I found a Q&A page searching Google last night trying to find out if this is normal for kittens, and someone said that it was possibly because he's losing his teeth. Apart from that, I'm having a hard time confirming that this is why.

Anyone with kitten experience know if this is normal for when they're losing their teeth, or should I be concerned about gingivitis? I wouldn't imagine that's the case since he's so young (about 5 months), so he wouldn't have had nearly enough time to develop enough tartar for something like that.

Here's some cute pictures for S&G:

Did he just finish licking his butt when you sniffed his breath?

Haha, no it's every morning. He's a kisser so he likes to wake me up like that, and he tends to lick my nose, so every morning I get a nice whiff of last night's cat food. Until I get up. I'll sit there stuffing my face in the pillow, and then back out to breathe, and he's right back at my face again. It's really sweet, but it STINKS. I hope it is just him losing his teeth and it will go away. It'll be a much more pleasant wake-up call. The other boy, I've never been able to smell his breath.

I took my cat to the Vet for a check up or shots or something and was asked what kind of food I was feeding her. I said I fed my cat "Ribbons" hard/crunchy food. She won't eat canned food wether it's mixed with crunchy food or not. I was handed a small tooth brush and a tube of fish flavored (it said so on the tube) feline toothpaste and instructed how and how often to brush her teeth. Can you imagine the look I gave the Vet? "Well, give it a try."

It was like trying to give her a bath.

Has brushing your cat's teeth been suggested yet?

I thought about it, but I haven't actually done it yet. I'll go ahead and give it a shot tonight and see how well it works, and how long it lasts. It's not too hard to brush the older one's teeth, I just have to wrap him up like a burrito. It's harder to clip his nails.

He might have gingivitis, which can lead to periodontal disease and widespread infections. A cat's breath isn't supposed to smell, that's why I'm asking about Nacho. You should take him to the vet, they'll probably just prescribe some antibiotics and suggest having some teeth pulled (if it's bad enough). Having teeth pulled for a couple hundred bucks is better than seeing them go too soon :ohwell:

A pm would have sufficed, luckystar. :frown:

Is Nachos breath still stinking? I don't know what would cause that in a youngin, but I have my 15 yo dog with horrible breath!!

In My Opinion
not sure about kittens, but at times if you were blind, you would not be able to tell which end of the dog was near your face by smell alone.

Unfortunately. Still have the other kittens? Are they losing their teeth / does their breath stink?

Recently? Where he was wearing his Rennaissance Faire costume talking to STEM students or something else? If it was that one, I thought the juxtaposition was funny. His picture was right between two theft stories!

So Nacho's rancid breath is subsiding. Still a little stinky, but nothing like it was. Guess it was just his teeth. Watch, a week from now it'll be stinky again from another tooth trying to fall out.

I don't have a problem with my cat's breath, but my dog; oh my Jesus! It's the worst smell I've ever experienced and I have a teenage son.

A while back the vet said it was periodontal disease and she needed to open up her gums to get the disease out. (over $500) So it's gotten worse even though I brush her teeth. I'm thinking I have no choice but to get her the surgery if not for her but for our household.
