Kitty cough

I adopted a stray cat about 6 weeks ago. (he is 5 months old) We took him to be neutered 2 weeks ago. Last Thursday he started sneezing and coughing and not eating. He hasn’t pooped since Friday….he wasn’t eating…but started eating yesterday. He is drinking and peeing but still coughing/hacking. Is it a hairball? What can I do for the poor thing? He isn’t playful…still no poop. We got some hairball stuff from Petco….how long until I see results? I feel so bad for the little thing. What else can I do?

Any suggestions?

I think yoru kitty might be sick (they can get colds too). I would make a vet apt and have him checked out to make sure its nothing serious and get him some meds to get him feeling better.

If kitty cat is wheezing, she may be trying to regurgitate a hairball. (Sorry for the envoked image). Since cats groom themselves with their tongues they eat a lot of cat hair, basically. That's why if you let your house cat outside occasionally he/she will immediately start eating grass. It's a dietary defficiency issue, although there are cat food formulas on the market for hairball care.

There is also hairball remedy at the pet store and yes, even Wally Mart that comes in a tube. It squeezes out of the tube like toothpaste and it's a dark brown color. Try putting some in the palm of your hand to see if kitty will lick it off.

If she won't, put some in the palm of your hand and grab one of her front paws (just tight enough) to smear the paste on her paw so she can clean it off. Check the directions for exact doses or applications; whichever word applies.

In a couple days, the wheezing will stop because kitty will have passed the hairball. Then you have to look for it instead of "find" it to clean it up because wherever they are when the urge strikes, cats will pass a hairball.

Just get a tube of "Hairball Remedy." I believe that's what it says on the tube. Kitty will be fine.

I know whereof I speak.

If he's coughing and sneezing, I'd take him to the vet. He could have an upper respiratory infection or something worse. Was he tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, etc.?

Cats can also get "kennel cough" just like dogs.

MDSMILE,

It may be unavoidable and probably for the best if you take kitty to the vet for "a physical."

Thanks to everyone for the words of advice. My 13 pound puppy (who thinks she is a cat) started coughing and wheezing last night. I guess they are more like my kids than I thought! I will call the vet and get them both in to be seen.

p.s. the kitty is better...he is eating and pooping and even a little playful...but still coughing.
