Ellen Kohl, assistant professor of environmental studies and affiliate faculty of WGSX, published an article, "'Some we’s weren’t part of we': intersectional politics of belonging in U.S. environmental justice activism," in the journal Gender, Place & Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography. In the article, Kohl draws on her experiences working with Environmental Justice activists in Gainesville, Georgia to argue that intersectional place-based identities and how we talk about them define belonging and exclusion, reinforcing existing power structures that perpetuate environmental injustices. Through the interrogation of the word "we" she explores how mundane, everyday practices of politics of belonging impact environmental justice activists’ abilities to achieve their self-defined goal.
