Blind Luck needed every inch of the Churchill Downs strip to run down Evening Jewel and win Friday's Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks by a nose before an Oaks Day record crowd of 116,046. Tidal Pool, who was part of the pace, finished third.

Blind Luck gave trainer Jerry Hollendorfer his third victory in the Oaks, putting him behind Woody Stephens (five), D. Wayne Lukas and Ben Jones (four apiece). Hollendorfer won this race in 1996 with Pike Place Dancer and in 1991 with Lite Light.

Last entering the first turn under Rafael Bejarano, Blind Luck still had just two beat entering the far turn behind modest fractions of 23.95 seconds and 48.15 and 1:12.50 established by Tidal Pool. Evening Jewel, under Kent Desormeaux, was stalking from fourth.

Here's the photo finish picture. Hell of a shot. Weather was beautiful there today, but tomorrow's a WHOLE different story. Southern IN and Central KY (including Louisville) are under a Flash Flood Watch from Sat morning till Sun evening. If the weather pattern holds like the Watch says it's going to, this will easily be one of the wettest Derby Days in history.
