They just called out a ambulance for lacerations to a hand from a snow blower. I did not hear all the details. Was wondering if anyone else out there heard it and where it was exactly.

Didn't hear where it was... they did say he was on blood thinners. It's sad listening to all these amubulance calls. The roads are a mess and it's going to take forever to get to the people that need help

If they would heed the warning of stay the heck inside, they wouldn't be out there getting attacked by their snow blowers! Hope they are okay. Can't imagine what you could be doing to a snow blower to get hacked up. Bummer

VERY easy to do.. especially if your Auger belt is old..

My BIL had to have his hand reconstructed due to build up of wet snow in the thrower.. Shuts off the snowblower, reaches his hand in the chute to dig out the snow, and the tension built up on the thrower, spins the thrower, catches the tip of his glove and pulls his hand in and chews it up.

The next year he's out of town, it snows and I offer my sister to come over and clear her driveway. She says it's TOO dangerous, I remind her that I was using that same snowblower (used to be my dad's) when I was 13 or 14.. Crank it up, go about 3 feet and ask her "When was the last time the belt was changed" to which she replies.. "What belt?" she calls my BIL and gets the same answer. I run down to the hardware store, spend $4 on a new belt and that beast was throwing snow a good 30 - 40 feet.

Yeah, so REAL easy to get a hand chewed up in a snow blower, and it happens ALL the time EVERY year in snow country.

Thanks for the explanation. Growing up in NYC the only snow removal I ever dealt with was hearing the Super shoveling on the street. It was the first sound you listened for when I was a kid then hoped it was deep enough for no school. Never used a blower myself.

hand trying to clear out the blockage from the chute most likely. unfortunately that happens when not experienced. really hope they didnt lose a finger.

After working around helicopters for 23 years I just learned never underestimate the power of something that turns at a high RPM and has blades!

EXACTLY.. Don't know the exact ratio but I would think something like 20:1 for the RPM of the Thrower to the Auger. So if the auger gets stuck just the tension on it may cause the thrower spin a full rotation or two even with the motor off, and there are usually three or four blades on the thrower that can catch your fingers or hand. Sitck your hand down the chute to free up some wet snow you have 4 - 8 pieces of very hard metal trying to take your fingers off at a very high speed.

The WORST accidents are the REAL new guys that put their hands down there when the motor is still running and the thrower is still engaged. That's when you see bloody snow 30 - 40 feet away.

Managed to keep my digits all these years. Shovel works just fine for me.

parts of them are made to break so you don't destroy the entire snow blower..

Always carry a few extra shearpins for the auger..
