Lake Lariat not really closed?

I thought Lake Lariat was closed to swimming? I drove past it today and their were a bunch of people swimming. So I pulled up to the gate to check out the signs and their are white signs taped onto the permanent sign stating that swimming is closed.

Why are the gates even open? Why is no one stopping people from swimming in the lake? If you don't read the forums or the CRE Website how are you to know that it isn't safe and that it is closed?

I was wondering about that, I've been looking for a house over there and noticed that their was nobody in it. Whats up with it? When I was little that place was packed. Is somebody dumping gas/oil in it?

mostly poo and fertalizer......

the problem is an algae bloom that could cause infections and such.

weren't the clams supposed to fix that?

i have only seen 3 floats, maybe there are more, but i haven't seen them. assuming 100 clams per float, they will need to be working some serious over time to do the job of cleaning the lake.
as far as i know, the only real solution will be to overhaul all the malfunctioning septic systems in the watershed AND get people and the golf course to use less fertalizer.

I imagine we will hear the gate is open for parking for the playground and bb courts. Not sure why, since this parking is not open the rest of the year for use and gosh darn if the playground and bb courts arent' used year round. There is parking on the other side of the playground. This should be closed. No need for "security" to check passes only part of the year and to leave the assumption the lake is open for swimming.

No, the clams don't consume toxic algae. They have more brains than some.

The clams do eat e-coli and cryptosporidium and filter a lot of other crap from the water. That is what the clam study is about.

Talked to my neighbor yesterday and she thought the lake was closed because they found a dead dog in there. Told her no, it's because of the algae. It's bad enough with the truth, don't need rumors to make it worse. I told her she probably got it confused with Lake Anna where the park ranger shot his dog and threw it into the lake.

The Lake play area is not closed. People might like to go there and have a picnic, play some volleyball or even just lay out in the sun. Swimming is the issue.

The lake is a beautiful area and boating is still allowed. Anyone wanting to fish should abide by catch & release. The thrill of catching one of those huge fish is still fun. Just put it back so you can catch it again.

Swimming is closed because of the algae which my cause skin irritation. The Health Department did not close the Lake. They issued an advisory because of the algae.

I heard from a guy I know that lives by the lake that the Mercury levels are threw the roof. I told him it was supposed to be closed due to the algae.

Their are lots of rumors going around and people have not been informed correctly.

Sorry but it's not a beautiful area. I hadn't been over that way in awhile and didn't realize what a mess the sand was. Grass is everywhere.

The signs that are up might as well not be there. You can't see them. They blend right in with the signs they are posted on. Had I not been looking for them I wouldn't have seen them.

If the lake is closed to swimming people need to be informed and know that. Their was at least 10 people in there yesterday. How many will end up sick? Wouldn't it be better to just close it up? If someone doesn't get to fish or lay in the sun then so be it.

But Becky's signs for the CRE Yard Sale and CRE Car Show are nice easy to read, laminated, color signs that are placed where you cant miss them. I guess when somethig important like a yard sale is going on the BoD can figure out a way to get decent signage.

With 12,000 people to get the word to, it's a rough task.

Mercury in the fish is definitely not confined to our Lake. As a matter of fact, you should only eat a limited number of fish from the Bay.

The reason we closed the lake to swimming is definitely because of the algae bloom. We tested the lake and from the test results I saw, it's safe to swim in the water that is not affected by the the bloom itself. The problem is the algae bloom ebbs and flows with the sunshine and water temps. In Florida, if a lake had the same test results, they would just put up a warning to shower after swimming. We closed it to swimming as a precaution. Better to err on the side of caution, they say.

Ecoli is not an issue according to the Health Department dept. They didn't put out a warning for ecoli... they put out the warning for algae... but like I said in another forum... Maryland has no Safety Standard for algae... so we're using those set by Florida... which is more stringent than the Deleware standards....

We're still working on permanent signage for the Mercury Warning.... the signs we put up at the lake keep disappearing on us.... the GM made the signs for the Car Show and the Yard Sale as a test... they came out pretty good don't you think?

Bright orange signs placed in the center of where you drive into the lake parking lot, signs throughout the sand. SOMETHING that can be seen and you can't miss it when you pull in.

It doesn't help that it is closed as a precaution if nobody knows it.

I'll be talking to the GM this morning... actually in a few minutes... so I'll tell her about the bright orange sinage.

I'm sorry it's embarrassing... Actually, algae is a naturally occuring issue.

We are looking for a company that will harvest it for us. This Algae is used to make biofuel and viagra. Since Maryland doesn't have a standard for this, we have to look to other states for the information and harvesting programs.

This was long before the algae. It was the beach and lake itself. Grass, trash and brown water. The up-keep is non-existant.

The lake should be closed and the gates locked. There are hardly any people there to start with and people using the playground and basketball courts can park in the other area. Leaving the Lake gates open gives a false sense of "Hey, it's ok to swim". If there are no gate guards there then close it! Signs blow away and are removed. If you want to put a boat in, you'd use the boat ramp over by the basketball courts anyway. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!
