Lake Lariat not really closed?

The Bay and the Rivers are somewhat self cleaning.. running water, water being replaced from bigger cleaner supplies.

Lake Lariat, from what I gather is a stagnant cess pool.

If it has a spillway, it's self cleaning..

Yes, it has a spillway, but it only will function if the
lake level exceeds the overflow tube on the drain
valve (sort of like your bath tub drain) or if the main
drain valve is manually opened by the maintenance
forces (who haven't done this in years).

There USED to be a preventive maintenance program
in place for the lake where AT LEAST once in the winter
the valve was opened manually and the lake was partially
drained and while the water level was lowered they
would take equipment and scrape, clean and regrade
the beaches at the lake then close the valve and allow
lake to refill from the underground springs, rain runoff
and small streams that empty into it.

Again, usually in the summer, the lake valve would be
opened and the lake would be partially drained (but not
as much as in the winter) and allowed to refill so as to
introduce clean fresh water to keep the water nice for
swimmers and introduce more oxygen for the fish.

In recent years, the BoD has decided that this was not
necessary and stopped doing it and as a result, algea
growths and blooms began, toxins built up, oxygen levels
went down and problems began.

Now, instead of spending a FEW dollars to resume doing
what worked QUITE WELL from 1959 - 1999, the BoDs have
been spending MANY dollars to listen to "experts" whose
only exposure to fish are the pictures they saw in textbooks
and the frozen ones in the supermarket, and "snake-oil"
salesmen who want to sell everything from clams and oysters
(which live in SALT water BTW) to bleach and fancy "devices"
costing the members in excess of $15K to "measure" the very
pollutants that can be seen with the NAKED EYE.

After all of this INACTION and SQUANDERING OF MONEY AND
RESOURCES the Bods publish "propoganda" year after year
stating that regardless how disgusting the lake may appear, it
is still safe to swim in or fish from. All the while EVERY YEAR
for OVER 10 YEARS people end up sick and at the hospital or
doctors' offices with ear infections, stomach infections or
respiratory infections after swimming in that lake. This is all
dismissed as "coincidental" by the Bod and PTB.

Year after year there have been MANY dollars spent on restocking
the lake and ususally 1/3 of the stock either dies or fails to
grow to maturity due to problems in the lake. Yes, a few fish
make it to maturity and a few fish that are caught are hardy
enough to look good, but this is NOT the norm!

And as a result of this apathy and inactivity the once beautiful
lake has become polluted, a dumping ground for trash, a health
hazard and an eyesore. One Board member here even has repeatedly
referred to it as a "mud puddle".

It is a shame and an embarrassment.

My 10 year old daughter got shingles last year only 1-2 weeks after swimming in the lake. Shingles is rare in children and usually only happens when they have a weakened immune system. My daughter has never had a problem with her immune system. This has caused permanent scarring on her forehead and her cornea. So I ask-does the algae in the lake cause a weakened immune system?

I haven't heard of that link.... but I am only beginning to learn about the algae.

I haven't seen anything that suggests that....

Would YOU let your kids (if you have any) swim in the lake, toppick? Do you have any dogs? Would you let them drink/swim in the water?

To each their own, I respect your choice not to let your family in the water, but to say the lake is more dangerous than any other body of water we have here, is taking it a bit far........

Well this question is for Becky. I hear the lake has been drained in the past. Why not just drain it and start all over again. Clean all the stuff out people have tossed in it (bikes, shopping carts, trash, furniture. and yes I have seen people toss stuff in it). We cant swim in it now so why not just start over I am sure there are residents that would agree.

Where's the proof it is ?

I don't see hoards of people or animals dying each year from the effects of the lake.....

So do you have proof that people will not get sick by swimming in the lake? Apparently a dog died by swallowing lake water.

Do we take Becky's word for it? Since when is she the expert?

:yay: Good idea, but MDE might have a problem with us dumping all that nasty water into Mill Creek and the bay all at once.
