Lake Lariat not really closed?

:yay: Good idea, but MDE might have a problem with us dumping all that nasty water into Mill Creek and the bay all at once.

Very true but they have done this before. Has the lake ever been this bad? And if so were they able to dump it before?

The lake has not been completely drained since it was originally filled in 1965. I think MDE would frown on it, or at least want to supervise with extreme caution.

The annual maintenance drawdown was about 6 feet in the fall or just before a major storm event (hurricane), and again in the spring when the rains promised to fill it quickly.

If drained, it would require dredging and landfilling of the debris. Not a cheap or easy thing to do.

Can you imagine how many people have tossed old bikes and furniture down there? I have seen it a few times just with in the last 2 years. Just imagine how much is there that I havent seen. It should be cleaned out shouldnt it?

So do you have proof that people will not get sick by swimming in the lake? Apparently a dog died by swallowing lake water.

Do we take Becky's word for it? Since when is she the expert?

I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert. My information on the Lake is only what I have heard from the CRE Historians, Lake Lariat Clam Project [LLCP], Lake Preservation Committee [LPC] and the internet. Don't take my word as expert.

I haven't been in the lake for 3 years because a fish bit me on the butt.:killingme

I would say don't go in the Lake until we figure this out.

This is correct according to what I have heard. Draining the lake would create a burdon on the whole eco system below the lake. We have to take that into consideration as well.

Well this question is for Becky. I hear the lake has been drained in the past. Why not just drain it and start all over again. Clean all the stuff out people have tossed in it (bikes, shopping carts, trash, furniture. and yes I have seen people toss stuff in it). We cant swim in it now so why not just start over I am sure there are residents that would agree.

We are looking into this as only one of the alternatives. If we were to do this, we would have to go through a vote of the membership. This would require even more taxes on top of our dues, road fees, and STD. This would require a Bond, loan or a Special Services District. Any of these would impact the mortgage payments of the members.

If we were to do this, it would not cure the problem. As I understand it, the algae feeds on the nitrogen and potassium that are found in our fertilizers. There are some who believe that the Golf Course has played a major role in our problem. If the cause is not defined and neutralized then the whole issue will only return.

I would like to see what the real experts say.

This yet one more example of how our footprint impacts our planet. Our groundwater is so important. Education is necessary as well.

Now now, people! We have to give the busy board
some leeway here! They have MORE PRESSING ISSUES
than health, safety, protection of life, fiscal responsibility
and attention to priorities.

They have to concentrate ALL of their "might" and
"resources" on going after an INDIVIDUAL who DARED to
speak out as a CITIZEN and they are wielding ALL of
their power to "bring him down" through PRESSURE ON
HIS EMPLOYER as they are too cowardly and dis-
honest to deal with him themselves.

So "the great unwashed" will just have to be patient while
MORE IMPORTANT things than SAFETY and HEALTH are
dealt with.

After all ... YOU are EXPENDABLE, whereas THEY are of the
UTMOST IMPORTANCE!

Apparently "Dr. Becky" from the "POACRE Dept. of Public Health and Safety"
has approved for the Lake to be opened to swimming (contrary to the
Calvert County Health Dept. who posted an ADVISORY AGAINST SWIMMING)
and feels that there is NO DANGER to "the kids". (who BTW "are AWESOME!")

AS SHE has advertised a SWIMMING PARTY AND COOKOUT at the LAKE for
the NJROTC at the local school. NICE! And I wonder WHO is going to pay
for the doctor bills and treatments for the ear, nose and throat infections
or the intestinal problems due to ingesting lake water.

Makes one go "Hmmmmmmm".

Since the gate is closed and locked, it appears that there is no swimming party. What makes you think that there is?

That event has been on the calendar for weeks... I was hoping to discuss the location with them after seeing the test results....

I just know that you could do a much better job with Activities, Community Involvement, Scheduling and the Fund Raiser... I've seen your work... in the archives there is plenty of your handi-work... all excellent.... I would love it if you would kindly assist as your schedule allows.... thanks...:coffee:

Just to clarify for all...the toxins testing for and found do not cause a skin rash...although the algae can still do that. The toxin cause internal damage.
"finger" sections of the lake revealed 5X the world health organization levels of dangerous leves (which if I remember was 20 PPM)...so we measure 100PPM
Some asked at a meeting today if it was okay to swim at the beach this was a different area, other shared the toxin can spread...some said they swam and were fine,...again then pointed out that you would not notice this damage...and that there was testing at the lake swimming beach area, but (as someone said) it was greatly less, 1/2 of the fingers section...idiots, so only 2 1/2 the dangerous levels.
50PPM
