So do you have proof that people will not get sick by swimming in the lake? Apparently a dog died by swallowing lake water.
Do we take Becky's word for it? Since when is she the expert?
I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert. My information on the Lake is only what I have heard from the CRE Historians, Lake Lariat Clam Project [LLCP], Lake Preservation Committee [LPC] and the internet. Don't take my word as expert.
I haven't been in the lake for 3 years because a fish bit me on the butt.
I would say don't go in the Lake until we figure this out.
The lake has not been completely drained since it was originally filled in 1965. I think MDE would frown on it, or at least want to supervise with extreme caution.
The annual maintenance drawdown was about 6 feet in the fall or just before a major storm event (hurricane), and again in the spring when the rains promised to fill it quickly.
If drained, it would require dredging and landfilling of the debris. Not a cheap or easy thing to do.
This is correct according to what I have heard. Draining the lake would create a burdon on the whole eco system below the lake. We have to take that into consideration as well.
Well this question is for Becky. I hear the lake has been drained in the past. Why not just drain it and start all over again. Clean all the stuff out people have tossed in it (bikes, shopping carts, trash, furniture. and yes I have seen people toss stuff in it). We cant swim in it now so why not just start over I am sure there are residents that would agree.
We are looking into this as only one of the alternatives. If we were to do this, we would have to go through a vote of the membership. This would require even more taxes on top of our dues, road fees, and STD. This would require a Bond, loan or a Special Services District. Any of these would impact the mortgage payments of the members.
If we were to do this, it would not cure the problem. As I understand it, the algae feeds on the nitrogen and potassium that are found in our fertilizers. There are some who believe that the Golf Course has played a major role in our problem. If the cause is not defined and neutralized then the whole issue will only return.
I would like to see what the real experts say.
This yet one more example of how our footprint impacts our planet. Our groundwater is so important. Education is necessary as well.
