How can the land line be out and the DSL still work?

I found this on the net:

The "voice frequency" of your land line (about 150 - 3,500) is
left alone to carry voice traffic. The DSL modem basically
segregates and encodes the signal on the line and feeds this
to a central office for data traffic.

So, it would appear that while your landline is out - the DSL
signals are making it to the central office.

I also found a few entries that said that they are now allowed
to get DSL without having to pay for a landline (VoIP).

Just to nit-pick...DirectTV, DishNetwork (offer's Earthlink), AOL, etc. offer "high speed internet." Yuppa - they partner with Verizon's DSL.

Oh, I always thought Hughes was owned by DirecTV or vice-versa.

Depends on what broke to kill the phone line. Yes, its the same wire, but think about all the crap at the switch box- hardware and software- could cause it to malfunction. And some things that can break only affect a certain range of frequencies.

Pretty much. That's why you need the MOdulator/DEModulator. The phone line travels in car A and the MODEM puts the DSL in car B. That's also why you need the filters for the phone. You only want to hear car A, not car B.

I didn't know they were finally allowing DSL without a phone line. Is Verizon doing this yet? I'd love it if they were.
