Laptop Battery Not Charging...

Even though it is plugged in. It shows that it is plugged in, not charging and only 25% charged.

I did shut it down, pulled out the battery, fired it back up, shut it down again and replaced the battery. No luck gettting it to charge.

Any ideas or do I need to replace the battery? It is about 1.5 years old.

TIA!

Is it a dell?

I don't know if it applies but had the same iissue with a Dell. Ended up replacing the power port on the laptop itself.

Why did you ask if it was dell? Is that a common problem that dell has?

Yes it is. Power port on the laptop is VERY fragile. One crack and it displays the same symptoms as hers.

One person trips on the cord and pulls it out of the laptop at an angle it's probably done

Chargers are notorious bad also. If you can find someone with a similar charger, that might be worth checking out, or someone who has a meter and the skill the check it.

I guess I could take it to Best Buy and see if they can check it.

You can get laptop chargers on ebay for under $10 shipped. Our HP and our Toshiba had similar issues, the Toshiba is built more like a tank charger got ripped out and it was pretty bent up but still chargers. Just ordered the one for the Toshiba took 3 days to get here and cost under $7.50 shipped, its not name brand but it works.

I have had bad luck with EBay chargers, longevity wise. Also, not common, but if you use powerline networking, they will destroy your signal.

If you see it's plugged in, and it works with the battery out, then the battery is most likely dead. Mine only lasted 2 years. (Acer) Got a replacement off the Interwebs.

:yeahthat:

My 21 yr old had an issue with his Acer battery also....only last about a year....he opted to replace the laptop for a new gaming one though and now uses the harddrive(Acer) for storage

Rose, one more trick you can try. Power down and remove the battery. With the battery out and the charger disconnected, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then plug in the charger and power up, then power down. Insert the battery and charger and power up. Sometimes this resets the charging circuits.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

my wife laptop did that a couple weeks ago (but it was an HP), i fixed it with this method

"This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.

1.

Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .

2.

Expand the Batteries category.

3.

Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .

WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

4.

On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .

Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging."

Only thing is i could 5 of the ebay chargers for every one of the oem ones. I will say that the prices have come down alot.
