Laptop Power Pack Cord

Well, the puppy ended up chewing on my laptop cord that recharges the battery and lets it operate while the battery is low - now I just get a snap crackle and pop with sparks coming out when I try to use it. I've tried electrical tape but then it doesn't work at all, so if I wiggle it just right and wait out the sparks, it works. Needless to say, I should probably replace it. Can I replace this with any old power pack AC adaptor looking cord, or does it have to be specifically a laptop cord and a Gateway at that? ... Also what's the price range for one of these? :frown:

As long as the new one is capatable, but for now just separate the conducters! Don't let them touch each other!

Dems, please unplug it and don't use it. You could easily start a fire. Take it to Best Buy and let them look at it. They'll be able to tell if it is generic or not.

If you know the exact model of you gateway, you could look up a search for that power adapter cord on Ebay and see what they are going for. I looked on the Gateway site and some of the cords listed are upwards to 90 dollars, so I would definately check out ebay first. If you aren't sure, you can also go to the computer chat board there on ebay and ask for some info on your perticular cord. Lots of helpful ppl there. Good luck. :howdy:

But wait, there's more...
Mine was about $130 to replace it, and that was with a generic from Best Buy vs. the HP model it came with it. :ohwell:

You CANNOT use any power cord you get your hands on. You have to replace it with one that provides the same output wattage & voltage as your computer. They come in many different wattages and voltages.

Read the transformer (big rectangular piece) on your cord. Write down the Output wattage and voltage.

You can then buy any brand name as long as the wattage & voltage match. You can go a little higher on the wattage but the voltage should be within 1-2 volts of your unit.

You also have to ensure the plug that goes into your laptop is the same.
