The Charles County Department of Community Services April 2012 issue of The SCOOP is now available online at Charles County Government. Printed copies are available at your local senior center.

The SCOOP contains news, special events, and trips especially for seniors. This issue features Holocaust Events, Oral Cancer Awareness, Tax Time Reminders, 20th Annual Southern Maryland Caregivers Conference and a Tri-County Senior Golf Tournament.

* The Richard R. Clark Senior Center in La Plata will hold a Holocaust Remembrance Day on Wednesday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m. This special program is dedicated to those who lost their lives and families in this horrific event. There will be readings, history, remembrance of martyrs and heroes, lessons we must never forget, and memorial candles. Special guests will be Holocaust survivors Ellen Cohen and Morris Kornberg. Presented by Lee Weinberger, Congregation Sha're Shalom.

* The Richard R. Clark Senior Center will also host Oradour-sur-Glane on Thursday April 19, at 11 a.m. Jacqueline Mackert will share her memories as a 10-year-old French child who witnessed the horrors of German occupation during World War II, focusing especially on the Nazi attack on the martyr town of Oradour-sur-Glane in the Haute-Vienne Department of France, on June 10, 1944. This atrocity was carried out by the Der Führer Regiment. A total of 642 men, women, and children were massacred without reason.

* The Waldorf Senior Center is featuring An Introduction to the Baha'i Faith on Tuesday, April 3 at 11:15 a.m. The Baha'i Faith is a world religion which unites all people in one universal cause and one common Faith. Baha'u'llah, who is the Founder of the Baha'i Faith, compared humanity to a beautiful garden of many different colored flowers and that we are united like "the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch." Presented by Weslie Ellison & Gerald McSee.

* The Waldorf Senior Center is also featuring a Hip Fracture Forum on Thursday, April 26, 8-10:30 a.m. The Hip Fracture Forum is open to the public. Seniors, caregivers, and professionals caring for older adults are highly encouraged to attend. At the forum persons will learn about risk factors, new surgical devices, treatment methods, and rehabilitation. Dr. Guillermo Sanchez, retired Orthopedic Surgeon, will moderate the Hip Fracture Forum which will be presented by Dr. Gregg Ferrero and Dr. Abdul Razaq.
