Lawyer for a will

Looking for a lawyer to do a simple will (young and don't expect anything to happen to me but almost a home owner and might as well have my bases covered). Any recommendations?

And Durable Power of Attorney, Living Will (Advanced Medical Directive) and Medical Power of Attorney.

You better expect it to happen to you because no one gets out of here alive.

I recommend:

I plan to live forever  . Thanks for the info

And you probably will.

But when you get hit by the bus and go into a 6 month coma it would be nice if you designated someone to pay your bills for you (POA) so that when you woke up the living forever did not mean you had to do it in an alley.

I don't even know that much about lawyers, I know there are different types. I started my search here.

Well, you might want to start with a living will. If you are ever hospitalized and become unable to voice your own wishes; like wether or not to terminate life support, that is what a living will does. I'm pretty sure anyway.

Now as far as if you should pass on, that "Last Will and Testament" comes into play. That documents what you want done after you're gone; with your remains, your property, money; who you would want to care for your young children; things like that.

You can get a living will at a hospital. You'd have to talk to a probate lawyer, preferrably; to draft a will.

Okay Kirk, should it cost and arm and a leg to get a Will drawn up?

No, but it should cost what it costs. Many try to cut corners and do their own via Legal Zoom for one. Now Legal Zoom has some good products and you fill in the blanks and call it a Will. However, I like another saying that fits in this situation.

"He who represents himself has an idiot for a lawyer and a fool for a client."

So if you go the DIY route take it to an attorney for a review. And don't be surprised to find out it's a start but not complete.

As for costs of the products I mentioned shop around. The location of the shopper drives the prices. If you are looking in downtown DC the cost will be higher than if you are looking in SOMD.

Call 3 attorneys and tell them what you are looking for and be specific as to what product(s) you are buying. Get a price quote for each (and as a package) go with the price you like as well as your gut feel when talking to them. Also ask around (somd.com as the OP is doing) and if Mom and Dad are in your area and still around ask them who they used.

Remember, Attorney's are for hire. You are the customer. They provide you a service that you pay for. Be an informed consumer and know not only what you are paying for but also what you want to buy . . . and why.

Finally look for one who will take the time to explain and teach you what is happening and what you are buying. Look for one who will appreciate your business and your situation. If you ever feel you are being talked down to or taken for granted by any provider . . . fire them. You work hard for your money. Do business with those who value your money like you do.
