Layering

I don't have any photo editing software- other than the use of a few free web-based ones (i.e. Picasa, photobucket, picnic...)

How do I layer (if that is a term) where there is a color photo that you turn to black and white and then you can add a splash of color to the areas of your choice?

I've tried to follow tutorials- but I just don't get it.

TIA:howdy:

Download Gimp.

You'll see the layers and the ability to play with them.

It's the poor man's Photoshop or sticking it to the man photo editor, depending on your views..

The easiest way is to create a B&W layer, then delete the area where you wish color to be.

Essentially, you're not adding anything, but removing it.
