Lazy gate guards.....

I went through gate 2 about 12:20 this afternoon. Of course, traffic is backed up to 235 with one lane open, pretty expected for the lunch rush. What pissed me off was when I pulled up to the guard and there were two people in the shack yapping away on their cell phones, one active duty and one civilian base cop.

Now, if there was only one guard available and the other one had to man the shack, the holdup would be understandable...but when you have one guy outside and two inside doing nothing, with a buildup of traffic waiting to get into the base, that's flat-out laziness.

You expected it to be backed up, you didn't take a different route, and you got what you expected. Now you are sniveling. WTF is wrong with you?

I knew you locals were dense, but come on. This is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to spell out that if there is a backup of traffic and more than one person sitting on their ass, one should get up and assist until the congestion subsides. It's not rocket science.

aps...the world's not against me, but I'm against people who don't properly do their job when the time is warranted. If it's a quiet day with just a few cars, okay, sure, sit down and enjoy a conversation on your phone. When traffic gets backed up, you get off your ass and help out. What's so bad about telling your honey you'll be back in a few minutes when congestion is cleared up? Nothing! You may choose to encourage people half-assing their job when they're backed up...I don't.

MMdad I expected traffic to be backed up, and I don't mind waiting when there's one guard on traffic and one in the shack...but when there's one on traffic and two in the shack talking on their cell phones, that's a waste. See above response. I know they may be short on people, and if they're working with minimum numbers I can accept that...when they have more than the minimum and nothing more gets done, that's where I have the problem.

you have no idea what the conversatio was. for all you know, one of those guards was calling in about a suspicious person and the other was calling to get mor ehelp at the gate. you automatically assume the worst about people you don't even know.

That's why the shack is manned with one person, not two. The second should have gone outside and help alleviate the congestion.

It's actually a plot to get you to eat at the Navy authorized sites. The gate guards really work for McDonalds and Subway.

For once I have to agree, having to enter Andrews AFB every morning it can be alittle annoying to see certain security people act in manner that gives the impression that they could care less if there going to make you late for work. Although I would offer some advise "Its not always what you say its how you say it that makes the differance. :larry:

While I agree with you that the decision to close one inbound lane at both Gates 1 & 2 during a time when you would expect an increase in traffic is not wise, I think your holding the wrong people responsible. I believe the phrase, "that decision is made at a pay grade a lot higher then mine" applys. I would suggest you take your complaint to the commanding officer or to the admiral running NDW. They are the ones responsible for establishing policy, not the poor souls working the duty.

I see where you're coming from BernieP but I disagree with your assessment. Yes, they are in charge of the policy, such as outlying the times which certain gates are open or closed. My beef is with excess personnel sitting around when traffic is getting backed up, and the level appropriate for ensuring that enlisted personnel and DoD cops are doing their job satisfactorily is the watch commander, not the commanding officer. I don't think him or some admiral want to hear about how the gate guards are sitting on their asses when they have other issues to worry about.

Gate 1 has a long approach to it and can accommodate many vehicles; gate 2 has a much shorter approach and therefore needs to move roughly the same amount of traffic in 1/3 of the distance. During an inrush of vehicles at an expected peak entrance time such as coming back from lunch, proper planning and use of personnel can prevent things such as the backlog of traffic going into gate 2 from blocking traffic headed north on 235. It's common sense that's not being applied.

Perhaps the gate guard was actually assigned to open a second lane and just didn't do it. That's always a possibility.

My question to you Mr. Cranium,

You went through gate 2, which is under construction. Since its under construction, there are no phones at the gate. So how do you know that the calls on those cells phones werent for offical purposes? You dont.... so quit your B***hing. Wait your turn in line like everybody else. I hope one day karma DESTROYS your life.

lol...you think the pax base is bad...try Solomons...you can roll right through just about any day of the week, any given time, military, civilian, doesn't matter....hardly EVER do they even come outta their shack, half the time, they are sleeping...no kidding. Granted, Solomons doesn't have the crap that Pax does, but a month or so ago, some naked woman drove right through the gate, guards never even got up....not even for a naked chick....
True, solomons is laid back, but I highly doubt your naked women theory

Ok, alleviate the congestion (waving traffic) and talking on the phone at the same time. GGEEEE, youre very smart

Oh just for everybodys FYI, that second lane should have been opened, but if something important came up, then that gives the gate sentrys the right to close it down. (I.E. VIP phone call) soon after, they would have to reopen it.

Thanks for pointing that out Captain Obvious. If something "important" would have come up, don't you think the other body sitting idle in the shack would have handled that? And if it was a person-specific thing, the shack warmer could have relieved your buddy so he could have taken the call.

Logically, I would expect the extra body to help out the poor guy getting bombarded...but it's not like I'd expect you to understand anything logical.

I dont think you made your comment clearly. As you specified, 1 sentry outside, 2 inside talking on the cell phone.

OK, lets take a closer look now. 1 lane opened, 1 sentry. He controls that lane. Other sentrys can open the lane, WHY....... Talking on the phone. Did something go wrong on the base? Who knows??!!!! 1 sentry on the phone cant go outside and wave traffic. Why do you ask?! Because it look unprofessional. So you close the lane down. Anymore question, LOSER!!!

Is that clear enough for you? Before you start blasting me, you need to think of what you wrote. Shall I highlight?

I pulled up to the guard (HERE IS YOUR 1 SENTRY WAVING TRAFFIC) and there were two people in the shack yapping away on their cell phones, one active duty and one civilian base cop. (NO PHONE SERVICE AT THE GATE BECAUSE OF CONSTRUCTION. 2 SENTRYS TALKING ON PHONE, WHY??? MAYBE SOMETHING IMPORTANT)

Is a phone call that important that the gate guard has to close a lane and take the call? If it is, why didn't the other guard relieve him on the lane?

You're trying to rationalize the minimal use of 3 gate guards, and I won't let you. Cry me a river.

Like I said, if I pulled up and it was just that one guard on the lane and one in the shack, I wouldn't have a problem. I could perhaps understand about being undermanned....but when the personnel are present and being misused, don't whine when I call your boys out. Tell your honey you'll call her back later and do the job you're supposed to be doing instead of allowing traffic to congest in a small area.

If your cell phones are the problem, you need to have those taken away.

Ok, but you stated on your first post that 2 sentrys were on the phone. What were they talking about.... I dont know. It could have been something important. So how is 1 sentry supposed to relieve the other sentry if 2 are on the phone. It would only make sense to close the lane down so that the sentry on the phone doesnt seem unprofessional.
