Leonardtown Elementary "Annex"

As most know Leonardtown Elementary School is undergoing renovations for the next 18 months or so. For this reason beginning tomorrow the school is now the Leonardtown Elementary School Annex behind Benjamin Banneker in Loveville.

Went there this morning and was quite impressed with the set up. This complex was used by Banneker and Margret Brent for their school renovations the last couple of years. Very tidy complex, trailers are well kept and all connected by covered raised wooden walkways. They are clustered together by grade and well organized. LES has an enrollment of 512 this year so they added on a few trailers in the back. Boy's classroom is excellent, can barely tell it is a relocatable classroom. Just as much space as a typical classroom, bathroom facilities right there, no need for hall passes and kids wandering around.

The staff including the new principal and asst. principal seem to have picked up right where Mrs Hall left off. Teachers strategically located throughout the complex watching over the activities all connected via walkie talkies. the asst principals office is located in the rear corner of the complex opposite of the main office, a nice touch ensuring administrative coverage. Intercom system was checked while we were there and it worked better than the squawk box in LES.

Despite a temporary location I think the school experience will be fine. If anything it will be more conducive to learning via fewer distractions. Students transiting to/from other activities are outside under the covered walkways and cannot be heard inside classrooms. If anything the kids may feel a tad isolated but It will certainly not scar them for life.

Oh and JPC, while I was there not a single one of the relocatable classrooms burst into flames :yay: As a matter of fact I think this complex has been in use for 4 years and has not had a single incident. However, I will insist that my boy carry a 50lb. class A,B,C,D fire extinguisher with him at ALL times just in case though.

I am so very blessed
I hope Boy has a wonderful school experience ahead of him.

How much longer drive will it be for him to go all the way to Loveville instead of the LES location?

Maybe 10 minutes, not much. This year he thinks he is grown enough to catch the bus and get off by himself. In the morning he will wait about 30 minutes until the bus arrives and in the afternoon he will have about 20 minutes until I get home. We are going to try it, we have a plan. And I have a spy shhhhhh.

You may be able to somehow hook it up like a back pack and strap it to his back! :yay:

Then he can pull out the nozzle Ghostbusters style and fight all those raging fires he'll be dealing with in those "death traps!" JPC will be so proud... :lmao:

I was rather impressed as well, though wonder how bad weather will affect commute to the various areas.

My kids both spent time in this complex when the new Banneker was being built and it was a fine experience for them.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the old Hollywood Elem. across from the Hollywood Post office, but that's where I went until 5th grade, when the new school opened. I spent the last 2 years in trailer classrooms and loved it. It was great having a bathroom right there and opening the doors on nice days. It cut down on distractions big time, because you didn't have a ton of people walking by all the time. The two teachers I had had a walkway where the bathrooms were so that the classrooms were connected. They used this to their advantage by switching classes. The 3rd grade teacher that had strong math and science skills taught those classes for the 4th graders as well and the 4th grade teacher had strong English and Social Studies skills, so she taught those classes for the 3rd graders as well. It worked out very well.
