There was an accident and a car fire within three hundred feet or so of each other.

Yep, cost too much to fix the bad road, although I imagine that money we spent on GMR woulda gone a long way, so we make the lanes smaller and hope. That works well.

Gosh it is a bad stretch right there.

Yeah, I hate traveling that stretch. I passed the accident on my way home from a hair appt and it looked to be a car rear ended another. I am surprised there are not more rear endings and sideswipes. That being said it might be because it seems everyone, myself included, puts their blinker on WAY in advance.

I avoid exiting from Moakley Street. Entering Moakley Street is also an adventure.

There are always rear enders there in that stretch. I too put my blinker way ahead of the turn. I have noticed early in the AM, a lot of people go up to the light and turn left and turn left on Miss Bessie lane. Much safer.

:yeahthat: It is the folks who insist on speeding through that area that cause the problems.

You mean the ones that think that stretch is an extension of the beltway and insist on doing 60 -65 thru there? I live in that area and have to drive thru everyday, I've almost been hit twice.....making a right turn from the southbound lane. Its ridiculous that they fly in that area anyway. The speed limit used to be 30 thru there, I guess the cops couldnt keep up with the speeders so they increased it to 40. Give an inch take a mile.

Maybe some speed cameras will help.

Pretty sure they wont, and even if they do, it will be an application that if practice bypasses the stated purpose of these things. The county will have to make new school zones to place them.

kwilla, how do you know that? I would think its more likely that the main cause is folks who are not paying attention, regardless of speed. that and idiots who pull out into traffic with no regard for right of way.

Folks who exceed the posted speed limit of 40 MPH are most certainly a problem because a) what should be a normal and safe gap in traffic is closed much too fast and b) there are several parts of the road where a car can look and see no car approaching yet that car seems to have come up out of nowhere and are on their arse or in their trunk because that car was traveling too fast for the road design and traffic conditions.

60-65? I think that number might be a bit higher than most of the traffic really travels through there.

Kwilla, I didnt say that speeding wasn't a problem, just that its not the main problem. I think a much larger portion of it, is, just as Aps said, that folks are not paying attention. Pulling into traffic, making a darting lane change to avoid someone who is taking a left, leaving the car behind them holding the bag, that sort of thing.

Speed does exacerbate the situation, but a poorly laid out road (what a difference a center turn lane where folks could safey wait to turn, and shoulders with real accel/deccel lanes would make) makes it all suck a lot worse.

Like shimming drywall to account for warped studs, it's a bad idea to not fix the underlying problem.

Has I said, I drive that stretch everyday going to and coming from work. I can almost guarantee that some of the cars that pass in the left lane are doing well over the posted speed limit of 40. They're traveling to fast to stop when they come upon a car making a left turn. Ive noticed this more in the area of the hosptial entrance because your vision is impeded by a small hill. If the traffic would slow down just a few miles an hour it would help. I would love to see more radar set up there in the morning & eveing rush hour.

If you drive the speed limit, and are estimating that 60-65 based on how fast they pass you, you are most likely overestimating their speed considerably. Most folks are horrible at judging speed, the only realistic way to do it for those of us without radar guns is to pace the flow and see how it flows. Having done that recently on GMR and 235, the average pace is 5-7 and 7-9mph over the limit most times. Peak on both is of course a lot lower.

If what you say is true about the way to collisions happen, that stretch of raod would be quite marked with twin black marks where folks tried to stop and failed. Even with ABS, marks are left. I submit that its not that they are going too fast, but rather they dont notice until it's too late, no matter the speed.

Radar isnt going to make it better, a better road design is the only real solution. Radar will drop speeds for a short while, but once the officers leave, the speeds go right back up.
