Les Misérables

What an excellent movie. I’ve always wanted to see this on stage and again when it came out as a movie but for whatever reason that just never happened for me. I read the book many years ago but lucky for me, I tend to forget details about the various characters and only remember the overall, general gist of a story. However, I do remember that Fantine was a terrible person, something the movie didn’t go into too much detail about, which was fine, I don't remember the details anyway. Fantine (played by Samantha Barks) nailed the singing; in fact, she was my favorite singer in the film. One of my favorite songs of all times is “I Dreamed a Dream,” which was sung by Anne Hathaway and she did a fine job but after hearing Susan Boyle sing it in the past, I feel ruined… but I don't think Boyle’s passion would have been appropriate for the scene anyway.

Hathaway is an actress I’ve always liked until she decided to show her bare crotch to the Paparazzi. You would think she could afford panties with the money she’s making but then again, perhaps after dropping 25 lbs. she had none that fit or they fell off at some point in her travels that day. I’m sure she is a busy girl and doesn’t have tons of time to shop. (there just has to be a valid reason right? :ohwell: ) But if Beetle juice ever decides to do another sequel and they need a female with a shrunken head, Anne Hathaway is their girl. Some people just don’t pull off short hair well and in my opinion, she is one of those people. Now, Jackman and Crowe really showed they are actors to the core with their performances, especially Jackman, although many critics have said Crowe didn't play the role of Javert very well, I think he did.

My husband find musicals grate his nerves but actually found this to be enjoyable perhaps it is because there is a story in the singing. Trust me, if he hated it, he wouldn’t have sat there and watched this nearly 3 hour long movie for the sake of making me happy. Nope, he would have gone to bed and watched another episode of "Man vs. Wild." :ohwell:

I've seen the stage show twice (once on Broadway with the original London cast) and I thought the movie was fantastic! Although, I don't agree with the casting of Russell Crowe. He is a great actor, but cannot sing well enough to pull it off. Hugh Jackman was incredible!!! Anne Hathaway suprised me with how well she perfomed.

Anne Hathaway played Fantine. Samantha Barks was Eponine.

I agree. Excellent movie.

My mistake.... I should have gone straight to bed after I watched it because I was awful tired. Eponine (Barks) was the one I thought sang very well. :yay:

What an excellent movie. I’ve always wanted to see this on stage :

Buddy of mine, his daughter and her school just did it. She's a freshman and is this cute, meek little church mouse for the most part.

In any event, dad said she has these pipes he had no idea she had, we asked for tickets and went. I don't know the play hardly at all. Invited my mom to go along. She's a theater geek and, when I mentioned it said "Go see it! I'm busy that night but it was fabulous!" She'd seen this very production the week before! And she asked who the daughter was and I was like "Dunno. I guess girl #4 or something. She's only been singing for less than a year, first production, freshman, elite school." In any event, it got moms 5 star seal of approval.

So...standing in line, we're chatting people up, who is your kid, whose yours, etc, and when we say who we are there to see it was "Wow! She's doing a fabulous job!"

Still no clue, right, it's parents, right? So, we sit with her uncle and a couple others (mom and dad gave us their 3rd row center tix!!) and it's starting to dawn on me that we are in for a treat.

3 hours later, blown away, exhausted, elated, stunned, I call my mom back and I say...

"Fantine"

I know singing. One of my girls is good enough to go do opera had she wanted to and had the drive. Enormous pipes, well trained, really, really good. Too lazy. Gift waster.

Now, my friends daughter wasn't THAT good but, :diva: she stole the show. Not just high school 'good' but, a future singing AND acting if she wants to pursue, that kinda it good.

ENORMOUS pipes, great control, we were BLOWN away.

I then watched it on TV a few nights later and whoever that chick is is amazing. That's how good my daughter is IF she worked at it. She has that level of talent. Friends daughter is well on her way. It was chilling how close she is now having just seen her live and then the TV version. She could have been an understudy, easy, for the real play. The skill drop off, and the overall performance would be like, maybe, going from a 10 to a 9. Maybe less.

That good. Wonderful. Just wonderful.

Hope you get to go see someone do it somewhere sometime!

Some people just don't like wearing underwear. Also, she lost 25 pounds? When did she ever have an extra 25 pounds to lose?

As for Les Miserables, is this the kind of musical that people that don't like musicals might enjoy?

Nope. It is the kind of musical where people who don't like musicals will HATE it even more; Every word, ALL the dialogue is sung. "Hmmm...perhaps I should open the doororrorororor and see what is oooooooutsiiiiiiiiidddddddeeeeeeuh?"

It is, for lack of better word, miserable, if that ain't your bag.

If you're looking for a musical that people that don't like musicals might like, try 'Chicago'.

Well... good enough for me... I'm not looking for a musical at all. Just wondering if I'd tolerate LM well.

That makes no sense. That's like me asking if one GaGa song is more tolerable than another. On the odd chance I'd want to find out. :lmao:

You're just trying to be ready with the Mr. Sensitive bit should the need arise, aren't you? "Why yes, Gweneth. We might well enjoy an evening at the theatre, my dear. I understand Les Miz, as we like to call it, don't you know, haw, haw, is quite the spectacular, far more refined that than droll, bourgeoisie 'Chicago' where they actually speak some of the lines. Can you imagine? Talking? In a musical?? Simply barbaric, I'd say..."

or Cats! which is no longer running. :bawl:

I saw Puccini's Madame Butterfly in the San Carlo Opera Theater in Italy when I lived there. I was only about 12 but it made a big impact on me - it's such a sad story!

Oh hell, I was trying to figure out if I might tolerate LM, the movie, well enough. It might take a date with Anne Hathaway herself to get me to agree to go to an actual theater performance of a musical. It may well even need to be a third date such that I was sure I was into her enough to be willing to put myself through that.

You didn't say 'movie'. You said 'musical'. I can't speak to the movie.

Now, that said, live performance is where LIFE is at. The sets, the talent, man. You GOTTA enjoy that once in awhile.

I liked it more than Chicago, actually. I can only speak for the movies on both as I have seen neither live. :ohwell:

When you are watching it at home, worst case, you turn it off and do something else. It is when you are on a date that you are sorta stuck.

I'm trying to watch the movie now. Less than 10 minutes in and it's close to unwatchable. I'm going to try to watch long enough for the story to get interesting.

They aren't even singing, it's this annoying cross between talking and singing.

Lose a bet?

Terribly bored this morning for some reason, and I don't feel like reading substantive financial stuff or tending to things I should be tending to. And it's too early to call people and harass them. And one of my roommates has left for work while the other is still sleeping.

So I figured I'd give LM a shot - try something different.

As I say, the play is where its at. Live performance.

When I am bored, really bored, I start YouTube-ing motorcycle crashes. The more dumb wrecks I see, the less likely I am to repeat the folly of others.

I usually don't get bored, not like this. There's stuff I should be doing and plenty of stuff in the queue that I'm interested in / wanting to figure out, I'm just not in the mood for those things right now.

I sometimes get what I call partial-brain boredom - whatever I'm doing isn't enough to occupy all the resources. That's easy enough to deal with, you just add something to what you're doing.

But this sensation, total boredom, is a bit strange. It reminds me of days long past. :frown:

Oh, and I've given up on the movie. I'm fairly certain now that I wouldn't tolerate a live performance well.
