Matthew 8:18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
21Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
I have a theory that Jesus only came to give "eternal life" back to man. When God created man... He apparently contemplated giving man eternal life from the getgo. But for some reason He didn't and when Adm and Eve had their first tryst.... He was happy He didn't double think Himself. Adam and Eve's fun day resulted in death for all the humans. So it's my theory that Jesus was sent to conquer whatever it was that was killing off humans.
Maybe this set of verses is the key to where my theory came from.
Jesus was also in a really turbulent time in Jerusalem. They were a conquered country.... Rome made her home in their streets. John the Baptist had just been beheaded for telling Herod and his wife Herodias "Repent".
Jesus didn't want to gather too big a crowd. So that's why He wanted them to go to the other side of the lake. If they left when instructed... they could get to the other side, in a boat, way ahead of the crowd catching up to them on foot. And... the crowd would have to find Him too.
Herod was afraid of Jesus. Herod thought Jesus was John the Baptist reincarnate. As long as Herod left Him alone... He could proceed with the mission. So, Jesus didn't want to stay in one place for too long while drawing these huge crowds. He might be viewed as a threat.
Check out verse. A lawyer [teacher of the law] wanted to follow Jesus.... until he realized it was a pauper's life... no home, no bed, no pee pot .... and then the lawyer remembered his elderly father who needed his care and burial. I figure this guy was talking.... he was someone Matthew would notice... an appointed official... a teacher of the law.... so, Matthew would be wary. Following Jesus around on foot... would cause his father to go unattended. Jesus said.... "Me or your dad?"
Jesus was saying.... "Following me might cost you family".
Let the dead bury their own dead.
