Lets talk 3/4 ton trucks...

I'm in the market. My old 1/2 ton rated at around 7400 pounds towing capacity isn't going to be enough to haul the trailer I want to get so I'm looking at trading it in for a 3/4 ton truck. Based on my preliminary research I'm leaning towards the Dodge 2500 SLT crew cab with the Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel. The engine is bullet proof and I like the styling of the truck. I also like the F250 and I know the new 6.4 and 6.7L Diesels are much improved over the old 6.0 which was plagued with issues. The Chevy and the GMC are great trucks but I don't like the comfort and I think the crew cabs are somewhat cramped (I have owned Chevy's in the past). All three trucks are options on the table at this point as I'm not sold on any particular one as of yet. I would assume that a used model a few years old would be my best bet from a value stand point.

A year ago I was in the same shoes, I wanted a truck without the worry of overtowing. Hence I now drive a 2012 Dodge 3500 with the 6.7 diesel, the price of diesel might be a factor, but you can use alternative fuel for it. I use several alternate fuel on mine and getting average 20 mpg driving around the Pax and Town Creek area.

you can get a lot of after market items to upgrade the 6.7 for performance and fuel economy. These engine are pulled way back on their potential for power and economy, just do some research to find them. Oh yeah, I was a Ford truck guy until I test drove all of them, the chevy was a turtle compare to Ford power and an injured turtle compared to the Ram Cummins.

You might want to wait a couple months. GM is redoing their truck line, new body, new drivetrain, new interior. The first models will be coming to the dealers any day now.

No opinions, but CarMax has a few. I'd been checking it for a year or more and there were always 3/4 ton Diesels on there. I was looking at stuff with less than 40k miles.

I'll probably wait until at least September to see if any significant rebates come out. Based on the input so far the Ram is looking pretty good. I think the 3500 will be over kill though as I probably won't ever tow more than 14K. I've been seeing a lot of late model used Rams and other diesels with extremely high miles for a vehicle just a couple years old. Makes me wonder what these people do that they rack up so many miles in a short time frame.

Work trucks is my guess.
