Kelly Eugene McClure-Hewitt

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office charged a 55-year-old Lexington Park man with sex offenses involving an 18-year-old victim.

Kelly Eugene McClure-Hewitt, an Assistant Principal at Leonardtown High School, was arrested and charged via warrant with Third-Degree Sex Offense, Fourth-Degree Sex Offense: Sexual Contact and Second-Degree Assault.

On March 27, 2023, in cooperation with St. Mary’s County Public Schools, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office detectives began investigating the victim’s written complaint. The 18-year-old male victim alleged a series of encounters with McClure-Hewitt in March at Leonardtown High School. The victim stated that during multiple visits to his office, McClure-Hewitt provided unsolicited gifts, discussed sexual preference and made unwanted sexual contact. Prior to the unsolicited contact, the victim did not know McClure-Hewitt and had no previous contact of any kind.

McClure-Hewitt was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown where he is held on a no-bond status, pending a hearing on May 18, 2023.

Headline says "Lexington Park Man". How about "Leonardtown High School Assistant Principal" for a headline instead?
Believe he was at Great Mills for some time and other schools.

Something smells here. The victim was 18 - legal age of consent. Victim says he didn’t know the perp until now so why did he start going to his office? Was he not getting what he wanted so decided to tell?

I'm not doubting you, but how did you find out that this was a special needs student? Just curious, I repeated it to someone who was until just recently involved in the teaching profession and they said they didn't know that and hadn't read it. It occurred to me that I hadn't either. Thank you.

I don't know anything about this particular case. But looking at the charges I wondered if the victim was a special needs student (I guess that's the currently used terminology?).

The 4th degree sex offense charge makes sense because the accused would appear to be someone in authority at the school the victim went to. Even with consent that could be a misdeameanor sex offense.

But the 3rd degree sex offense charge requires either a lack of consent (plus one of a list of other elements, e.g. the use of a weapon or a threat of serious physical injury) or a victim under the age of 16 or some form of incapacitation, which would include the victim being a "mentally defective individual."

So, again, I don't know anything about this particular case, but absent more information it would seem the victim being a special needs student is a possible reason for the 3rd degree felony charge.

Thank you, that sounds reasonable.

I'm not doubting that any of this is not true. It's just that I happen to personally know someone who was accused of, if I recall correctly, inappropriate touching involving a 16 year old girl. He was called to the office, informed about what was going on, told to pack his things, and suspended while the investigation was conducted. Nearly six months later, after he went through all the embarrassment, threatening phone calls from students at his home, all the lawyers, treatment for depression and anxiety, etc.; he was reinstated. Turns out the 16 year old girl, who was now attending high school (the incident allegedly happened in middle school two years prior) spotted him accompanying a group of students about to move up to high school. She told a friend that the teacher had touched her on her butt. The friend told the principal at the high school, who informed the police. Turns out it was just a story she made up to impress a friend. It went too far and in order to save face; she had to continue to insist it was true. This girl was not in this teacher's class or orbit EVER, but you know guilty until proven innocent. He went through hell and at the end of the year, turned in his resignation. He had been a good teacher up until that point and left the school system in Virginia, both bitter and distrustful.

I'm between horrified that it might have happened (I have a special needs "child"), hoping that it didn't, and benefit of a doubt. Horrible thing to be falsely accused of something. Worst thing if it's true.
