It depends on the teacher....you can go to the school and get the assignment at the guidance office

What were the books that they had to read?....my girl read "a parrot in the oven" and had to write 5 questions about the book and then write a paragraph discribing it

When my boy was in 10th grade he read "Anthem"(hated it) and had to write a 3 page double spaced report about it....thank God it was double spaced or he would have never got those 3 pages out of that 70 page book :faint:

S, who is in honors 10th grade had to read The Life Of Pye and a novel of her choice. L, in 11th grade standard only had to choose 3 different news paper articles.

I guess I'll go to the school tomorrow.

I copied and pasted this info from the Leonardtown High School's web page. I also included the info for English 10 Honors, English 11 CM, and English 11 standard. The url for the English summer reading section is attached also.
English 10 Honors
Summer Reading Assignment

Overview

Students who wish to succeed in Honors English 10 need to be independent, hard-working, and creative problem solvers. The Summer Reading Assignment is designed with these attributes in mind.

Required Texts

This year, students are offered choice in the novels they read for summer reading. You are required to read two novels.

The first novel is a choice from the list below:

In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Silas Marner by George Eliot

The second novel required is a novel of your own selection. You are to choose a fiction or nonfiction work of literary merit you have not read previously and that is appropriate for your own reading level (remember, you are in Honors English). Your book should be at least 150 pages long and reflect some aspect of you as a person. A parent or guardian must approve the book selected.* Your assignment for this novel will be presented the first day of school; you should know it will take the form of a book talk that not only presents the novel but also serves as an introduction of yourself to your teacher and classmates.

English 11 CM

Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.
-Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author.

In order to promote reading and American literature, English 11-CM teachers require every rising Junior in English 11-CM to read an American novel. The novel listed below will be discussed, tested, and analyzed in your English 11-CM class the first week of the new school year.

Novel: A Lesson Before Dying
Author: Ernest J. Gaines

Requirements:
• Read the entire novel PRIOR to the first day of school (August 20, 2008)
• Bring a copy of the novel on the first day of school (August 20, 2008)
• Be prepared to answer questions based on characters, setting, plot, themes, symbolism, and dialect

Grading:
• Selected response test with 1 BCR and 1 ECR will be given within the first week of school (possibly the first day)

Suggestions:
• Take notes that will assist you in discussions and on test and writings
• Write down specific questions that you have related to characters, plot, etc. in order to gain clarification

Assignments

For the “assigned” novel:

Cornell Notes should be completed for each chapter of the book.
Entries should be formatted in the following manner:

Direct quote from text (including page number) Relevance of quote to text

Sample from In the Time of the Butterflies

“From the beginning, I was so good, Mamma said she’d forget I was there. I slept through the night, entertaining myself if I woke up and no one was around.” (page 44)
This quote shows that even as an infant Patria was concerned about others. She did not want to make a scene or cause too much trouble – this is in contrast to her other sisters who always found themselves seeking attention.

You must include at least one entry per chapter (or about every twenty pages). You should have between twelve and twenty entries depending on the novel read and your interaction with it. Cornell Notes will be assessed out of 20 points.

Your teacher reserves the right to quiz you on your novel the first day of school.

For your chosen novel:
You are required to create an oral presentation introducing yourself to your teacher and classmates. In your presentation you must explain why you selected the novel you did and how it relates to your life (characterization, major events, themes, etc.). You must have at least one artifact that relates to yourself and the novel.

Your presentation should run between two and five minutes. You will want to prepare a speech of longer than two minutes as people tend to speak more rapidly in front of a group than they do alone.

Required speech elements:
1. Novel title, author and year of publication are mentioned
2. BRIEF plot synopsis (you are not retelling the plot to us) – provide only enough information to interest the class in the novel DO NOT give away any critical events or plot twists (including the ending)
3. Reason for selecting the novel
4. How the novel ties to or represents your own life
5. Artifact to serve as a visual aide that represents the tie between the novel and you

You will be assessed out of five points for each point listed above.
Timing of your speech will also be assessed out of five points.
Project total = 30 points.
