Library Books

My third grader came home with a library book yesterday that kind of surprised me. I would have thought they'd keep the books a little more age appropriate.

Does anyone think an 8 YO should be reading The Grapes of Wrath?

It's labeled as an advanced reading book, with a grade level of 6.9. I think she could read it, and could understand almost all of the words, but to understand the story?

I didn't read that book until 9th grade, and that's about the age that seems appropriate to me. Isn't there a graphic description of a car crash with impalement? I can imagine how much that would upset her.

I can imagine how nuch that would upset her.

Not to mention the breastfeeding part.

Is this a book she chose on her own, or an assignment? Because if it's an assignment, I'd have a talk with the teacher about indoctrinating children with liberal agendas concerning immigration and Socialist propaganda.

You know, I hate libraries. I have a fine at the Leonardtown library...it's $40. I haven't been to the Leonardtown Library in at least 4 or 5 years. I also have an overdue fine at the library in my county now. Procrastination is a disease. I need help. :bawl:

I often have hefty late fees too, although lately I've been pretty good. I don't stress, cause the books are free to borrow, and late fees go toward maintaining the library. They just built an awesome new library in our town, and I like to think I had something to do with that. :roflmao:

 It's not that I mind the money going to the library, I mind it leaving my wallet!

She got that from the school library? An Elementary school? Who the heck wrote that book order?

I sell books to schools/school libraries, including that particular title. Books for Accelerated Reader are labeled with a Reading Level and an Interest Level. Steinbeck is definatly an Upper Level (high school) interest level. Reading level does not mean a title is appropriate for a kid in that grade. Heck, books by Janet Evanovich, Tom Clancy, and John Grisham fall in the 5-6th grade reading level range.

Umm..Max fine is $5.00 They charge the replacement price if the book is considered lost or stolen.
Since it has been 4- 5 years, they conclude you either lost it or have it.

Sometimes the library system will use a collection agency to get their money back to replace the book...and that will cost you more than the $40.00.

Call and plead your case and offer to replace the book....wont hurt to call...

I think kids sometimes just choose books for the cover or something a friends says about it. Glad to hear she'll be picking a new book.
I remember picking out books at that age because the cover was pretty. Some of them were winners and some I couldn't get past the first couple of pages. Sometimes I would find a book I really liked and I would read and renew it over and over.....

This reminds me of the book "One More Day" in the book the kid comes home with the same library book he had read several times, and mom questions his choice, kiddo says he wanted a different book (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and librarian said it was too hard. Well, Mom went to library and demanded that he son be given the book he asked for as you never tell a kid something is too hard, always let them try. LOL

That book is a Oprah/Hallmark movie on Sunday just as an FYI, excellent read, and I am not even a big reader.
